: converting auto to manual
ray1970ss Nov 27th, 08, 4:52 PM Men, I have a few question about converting a 1970 Chevelle th 350 Auto to a manual. I have a muncie in the garage and will be going with that.
1. Does the trans tunnel need to be modified?
2. What is everything involved with the brake pedals and clutch pedal to convert it over?
3. What bracket(s) do I need under the car?
4. Drive shaft? Shorten? Lengthen? Stay the same?
5. Rubber boots? Where do I need them?
Thanks a lot.
Ray
furball8994 Nov 27th, 08, 5:05 PM This kit will get you all the "hardware" needed. http://www.ss396.com/mm5 (http://www.ss396.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=chevellecamino&Product_Code=FMCK-68&Category_Code=4SPEEDCONVERSION)
As for the trans tunnel. You don't need to do any mods to fit the trans, But you will need to cut out for the shifter and add this panel. SHIFT HUMP WITH CONSOLE (http://www.ss396.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=chevellecamino&Product_Code=RST-72D&Category_Code=SHIFTERHUMPS), SHIFT HUMP WITHOUT CONSOLE (http://www.ss396.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=chevellecamino&Product_Code=RST-72A&Category_Code=SHIFTERHUMPS)
I'm not sure about the driveshaft length.
blumont Nov 27th, 08, 5:12 PM Well, I just did it on my 65, so maybe I can help a bit
1. You will have to cut the hole for the shifter and possibly install a shifter hump (available aftermarket)
2. Aftermarket pedal assembly available but probably better off finding an oem set. Very easy to install. I assume the 70 is close to the same as my 65.
3. No brackets required, other than possibly a bracket to attach the return spring for the z bar. ooops, you will need bracket that attaches to the frame for the z bar
4 Not 100% sure on this. Depends on which muncie you have as far as which yoke is required. Length should be ok on the drive shaft
5 Rubber boot for the shift fork in the bell housing
Rubber boot in the firewall for the clutch rod.
Both of these available aftermarket also
There are quite a few good write ups here about the swap if you do a search
sheeesh, I type way to slow
Lionel-n-Chevelles Nov 27th, 08, 6:26 PM Your Driveshaft length will be OK. Powerglide, Turbo 350, Muncie 4 Speeds all use the same length driveshaft.
Jim Mac Nov 27th, 08, 10:04 PM as long as the muncie is a 70 or earlier, you can just slip your th350 driveshaft and yoke back in when your done. Dont forget you'll need a Neutral safety switch for the clutch pedal. If you want a reverse and dont have the backdrive assy. hurst makes a switch for their shifter.
if your going with a console, do yourself a favor and buy the competetion plus shifter. They make a correct one for the console for our cars. 100 percent better over the stock muncie POS shifter, but expensive.
Your going to need a cast iron nose starter for the swap to fit your stock bell housing. if your going with the 14 inch bell, the starter uses a different mounting bolt length. You need two. make sure you get the right flywheel for the bell housing. make sure you dont try using a truck bell housing without the spacer for the bearing retainer plate.
Lastly, when you get the swap completed, and go for your first drive. make sure you get the silly grin off of your face before going into the house, or someone will be wondering what you've been up to! Jim
BUBBA2711 Nov 28th, 08, 8:08 AM What tail housing does your muncie have? If its a pass side speedo you'll need a longer speedo cable.
BUBBA2711 Nov 28th, 08, 8:44 AM I just wasted 30 minutes typing everything you'll need and when i clicked on spell check it wiped it out. Sorry i'll post it again later.

Not sure which tail housing i have, I had a 59' corvette that had a bunch of spare parts come with it, one such part was this muncie. I kept the muncie knowing I would use it eventually. I have to dig it out of the garage and take a look at it. Right now I am out of state for thanksgiving, im in oklahoma. Home is in Kentucky.

sorry to hear that, I appreciate the effort.

I have the stock consol, do I need to get a different harness for the manual? Will that connect the neutral safety switch at the clutch pedal?

i just remembered, the muncie does have a hurst shifter on it!! Score!!
Ive done the exact same thing on my 70, basically everyone gave you all the information that you need.
Pedal install will be the easiest thing on the list, other than getting an adult body in that awkward position you should have that done in 20 mins.
take the cap off your distributor, because when you take the th350 off the engine has tendencies to move and could possibly break.
its a pretty self explanatory process the biggest mistake i made was install my shifter linkage backwards 1st gear was second 2nd was first etc but that was an easy fix
