Hey guys I bought a torque converter with atleast a 2200 stall speed. I was planning on using a 280h cam from comp cams but have decided to change my mind and go with a 274 extreme energy. Now this cam doesnt need a non stock torqe converter like the 280 but should I still put it on,I mean i did spend the money to by it. Will I get any performance advantages switching from the stock converter when it is really not nessesary. What would be the difference with having a stock cam with a high stall torqe converter and a stock? just a newbie question I had. Thanks

with the Xe274 you will need atleast that 2,200 stall.

Tell us more about your engine and gears, tire size. im runing a 3,200 stall with the Xe268.

You will get great performance advantages to using it. A motor makes say 40HP ideling on the line and if your stall is stock then it will lock up at 1,800 or so and leave the line with say 80HP

Now if your using a 2,200 stall and leave the line and it locks at 2,200 your engine will have 150HP.

These are theoretical numbers but its how it works I beleive

cars with 5,000 stalls leave the line with almost all their horsepower from start to finish. Thats why they take off so fast and sound nutz !

If its still confusing take a look at a Dyno sheet. Or some one else jump in and explain pls.

too little stall will make your car studder and fall on its nose and maybe even stall.

I've never had to deal with torque converters and matching them to specific setups. I've always been a gearbox guy.

When selecting a torque converter based on the power curve from a dyno sheet, do you choose the converter based on peak HP, 1000RPM less than peak, or what?

Just looking to learn something new.

Team 140 , If your going for pure ET and you don't care about streetable combo I think they use stalls just below the peak HP. Cars like that don't drive on the street to well.

best way I think is to match it with the cam. If the cam range is 1,600-5,800 like the Xe268 then you'd want a 2,200 stall if your car is light if your in a heavy car you'll need more.

with the Xe274 and a heavey car 4,000 lbs might be a slow start with a 2,200 stall

using too low a stall is like leting the clutch out without giving the car some gas pedal , what happens ? it stalls.

the Xe274 is 1,800-6,000 but I wouldnt use a 1,800 stall. more like a 3,000

3,000 sounds scary when you've never drivin a car with a higher than stalk stall but it's not at all. last year I went through the same thing about thinking it wouldnt be streetable but only if you hammer on the gas will it reach 3,000 before the car launches. If you slowly give it gas it will gracefuly walk through an intersection.

Im thinking about going with the xe274 cam and from what ive gathered all over the net, a 2400 stall is minimum for this cam
