I want to do a matte black finish on my Chevelle with the glossier black stripes....I was thinkin of using the YearOne stripes....would I shoot clear over to eliminate the edges on the stripe or will that defeat the purpose of the matte finish???

Sorry....not a paint guy...just trying to get info

Thanks

i'm no body guy either, but it would seem like the right thing to do would be to paint the entire thing glossy first, then mask off the stripes, or use the negatives from the stencil kit, spray over with the matte paint on the rest of the hood, AND THEN clear over the stripes to bring them to the same height as the matte finish. does that sound right?

I would think that would almost give the ghost effect.

Hes describing reverse masking for the stripes or laying the stripes down first (gloss) and then covering that striped area (masking that off) and then shooting the matte over the whole car. then removing all masks and shooting CC

I dont know how clear would work or if you would need a flattener or not. I thought about going the other way and doing tuxedo black with matte stripes (like stripes / badges on an AAR cuda, for instance) but havent decided what to do for sure yet.

Good luck

i am not sure i was making myself clear enough. ha! that was 'punny' huh?

anyways, this is what i meant:

1. paint hood with glossy black
2. mask off only the portion that will be stripes (the stripe and the 3/8" or so pinstripe around it)
3. paint over the rest of the glossy black with matte
4. remove masking, then mask off matte finished area
5. spray over glossy black (this is the striped area only) with clear to bring it to height of the matte over gloss (the rest of the hood)

*that way, the glossy stripes are clearcoated, your matte is flat, and they both have the same number of layers, so they are the same height, right?

i'd do it the other way around. gloss black car with matte stripes. clear coat everything even the stripes
