ovelle Feb 1st, 05, 4:16 AM Also, check the intake ports to see if the stud holes come through.
If so be sure to put thread sealant on them or you will go nuts trying to find out why you are pulling oil into the cylinders

is this my problem????

my motor i just built is smoking me to death mentally and physically.thought my perf rpm was warped bought a vic jr. and new gasket told myself and cousin if it still smokes after intake and gasket swap,,the freakin' motors gettin' pulled..stuff like this just makes me feel like
collecting matchbox cars and giving up what i love most graemlins/clonk.gif ..well this weekend i'll pull them all out and seal them,if it works than i owe you a 12'er. graemlins/beers.gif

RB69SS396Conv Feb 1st, 05, 7:32 AM Many aftermarket heads have the stud holes portruding right directly into the intake ports. Can't say about those particular ones, I've never had a set of them, but I'd suspect they do too. It's easy enough to look.... just pop the carb off, pull an intake stud out and shine a flashlight in the hole, and look in the in the intake port.
The best thing to use on the stud threads is Loctite PST, automotive pipe sealer with Teflon.
Unfortunately, new motors that smoke are all too common.... but that doesn't make it any less aggravating when YOUR OWN smokes. Just think carefully about every place that vacuum and oil come next to each other, and make sure that everything is done right. Intake gaskets, rings, valve guide seals (which ones did you use? Comp 503s or similar? if you used Fel Pro, they won't stay put on .530" guides), PCV system (use stock valve covers if possible).
ovelle Feb 1st, 05, 12:55 PM oh yes they protrude into the runner saw that before i assembled them, just ignorance to assume that oil wouldnt get past the threads i guess..i know a new motor should smoke but not this much..

Wolfplace Feb 1st, 05, 1:01 PM Shane,
It's very possible if they go into the intake port.
I for one am not a big fan of the Loctite or ARP's Teflon sealant except for pipe threads.
I've had too many leakers.
Works excellent on pipe threads though & fair on bolts.
For years all I ever used was Permatex Hi Tack or non hardening sealant #2 & then started using Hylomar & never had a leak.
Permatex has a somewhat new thread sealing compound we are using now that works great.
I like it better than any of the other stuff we have used.
Oddly enough it is called Thread sealant
I use the HI Temp (59235) as Permatex tech says it is the same as the hi performance only with a higher temp rating.
It looks like the white Teflon stuff but isn't.
Don't have a clue what it is just know it works ;)
Here's a blurb from Permatex:
Permatex® High Performance Thread Sealant

pdq67 Feb 1st, 05, 11:12 PM He, He!! A little "daub" will do ya!
I still like old-fashioned Permatex, "Indianhead Shellac Gasket Cement" in the shoe-polish dauber bottle..
But I'm not quite as old as "dirt", yet.....

My neighbor had a smoker like that and built a new shortblock, everything different, went from 283 to a 383. Used same heads and intake. It still smoked. Had already changed intakes earlier to rule that out. Found out the heads had been milled and the intake side had not been milled to match the intake. Changed heads and smoking stopped. Food for thought.
