: for all you manual trans racers, burnout procedure?
RatONaStick Mar 9th, 05, 9:28 PM do any of you manual trans racers have any tips or info on a burnout procedure for a stick shift car? ill be using a set of slicks for the first time and i dont want to look like a maroon when i go to do the burnout.
something like, roll through the water box and stop at the edge of the water, apply linelock then heat the tires for 5 seconds counting in thousands, then release linelock and power out.
should i do the burnout in 1st gear or 2nd? or should i start in first then shift to second during the burnout(im not sure if thats okay).
how long should i heat the tires? 5 seconds? more? less?
thanks
AllGoNoShow Mar 9th, 05, 9:36 PM 2nd gear....I have Drag Radials so I go around water box...back into until the rear tires are a foot away from box....set line lock, drop clutch at about 4K and roast em for 3-5 seconds.
383Malibu Mar 9th, 05, 9:44 PM We use 3rd gear (5-speed with 5.00 rear gear). The amount of time will depend on the tires. Our Goodyears like to be heated up pretty good (3-4 seconds) on every pass, but our M/Ts only need heated up the first pass and then just hazed after that.

i have brand new hoosier 26x10 slicks, anybody have any experience with them and any idea on how long i should heat them up?
since these slicks are new, should i heat them up any more or less then usual on the first burnout?
mr 4 speed Mar 10th, 05, 7:45 AM If they're the same compound as the Hoosier QT Pro's,a good 5 second burnout for the 1st time should do it
joespanova Mar 10th, 05, 8:00 AM keep in mind the higher the gear you use for the burnout the harder it is on the clutch when you come out of the water.......I use a McCleod adjustable aluminum with iron disc and use 2nd gear for a burnout heating the tires until I start to feel the car want to pull ,probably some where around the 5-10 second window and release the linelock......no dry hops.
loader1 Mar 10th, 05, 10:09 AM Brandon,
Everything Joe said is right on! In addition remember that things will change as you tune your launch. You will find that you'll be adjusting tire pressure and the length of burnout as you see how your car reacts.
Also don't assume that the person directing you in knows what he is doing. Make sure that you don't go too far through. Last year as a first timer this happened to me. Smoked the clutch a little before a friend of mine saw it and ran over to stop me and guided me back. Now I point my mirror down so I can see for myself. graemlins/thumbsup.gif
Oh yeah, and as a first timer w/ a line lock, as you are thinking about everthing at the line (ie, reaction time, lights, etc.) don't forget to take you finger of the l/l button our you will put the fun in being a spectator at the dragraces like I did the first time :D
Lots harder than it looks.

SS_Dave Mar 10th, 05, 11:39 AM Here is my method.
First run of the day:
1. pull out of the water box to dry asphault.
2. Set the line lock.
3. Stick it in 2nd or 3rd gear.
4. Tach up the motor to at least 3 grand.
5. Drop the clutch quickly to shock the suspension. This is important to make sure you get both tires spinning. Otherwise, good bye posi.
6. Bring the rpm up to 4 - 45000 rpm and hold it.
7. Listen for the rpm to drop down some. This is were the tires are starting to get hot and load the engine down.
8. After step 7, mash the gas and bring the rpm back up to 4000 or so and give it an honest 5 sec count.
9. Release the line lock and let the car go.
10. Shove the clutch in whil letting off gas.
11. Stage it asap.
Rest of the runs.
Same except for step 8 is only 1 or 2 sec.
good luck
now I'll go back and read the other replies to see if anyone else does it the same way.
RatONaStick Mar 10th, 05, 12:43 PM thanks guys, excellent info.
on the clutch, when i replaced the muncie for the iron case ST10 i swapped out the centerforce DF clutch disc with a fine spline ram metallic disc, which is metallic on both sides. hopefully i wont have any problems cooking the clutch.
from here its just a matter of getting the slicks mounted and finishing up the last few items on my list. with any luck ill be able to make it up to the track in a month or two, ill post the results whenever the time comes.
540Hotrod Mar 11th, 05, 1:08 AM I roll into water in 1st gear and "wing it" to just get tires wet. Then pull way out past box to dry area of track. Set line lock...Then I stick it in 3rd gear (5 speed..3.07 gears) and start tires spinning. I hold it around 3500-4000 for 4-5 seconds.
Then I let off of pedal slightly as I release line lock to come out of burnout. I immediately pull to the line and stage.
As said...NO dry hops! Go straight to the line!!
Good luck.....you're going to love it!
Actually, launching with slicks is much easier than trying to get street tires to hook.

ive been to the track quite a few times and have ran a few manual trans cars, but this will be my first time using slicks. i cant wait to see what the car can do with some traction.
again, thanks to all who responded.
