I've searched the archives and have seen a few posts asking about correct part numbers for Chevelle stering wheels, but there doesn't seem to be much. I have a wheel 9749408-1 which I believe is for a 1969, but would like to know for certain. Perhaps I've missed this discussion, but could someone shed some light on it again for me? It's the hard black plastic wheel.
Thanks in advance,
Dane

My nos 69 wheel is part #3997584 and is black in color. Can you post a pic? Phil.

Hey Phil,
Here is a shot of the face and the back. Based on the shroud and emblem I'd say it's a 69, but those could have been changed. Anyway, hopefully someone can help with the number on the wheel. I've seen posts referencing the 974xxxx-x number system, but never any answer as to where it fits.
Thanks,
Dane

Hi Dane, the # I posted was the gm # on the box. I just took the wheel out and 9749408-2 is on the one I have in the same location as yours. Hope this helps, Phil.

I think your horn bar is a reproduction. The grain is a little differen than the originals. I'm not talking about the difference betwen a 69 and a 70. The repro horn bar grain is different than original IMO.
You definitely have a 69-70 wheel there.
And it may be reproduction also as it has no grain on the rim. I know some did and some don't, but the repro wheel doesn't, so this could be a repro wheel.

I agree that the shroud isn't right and probably Repro and as far as the wheel I haven't a clue if it is or isn't. Seems odd that they would use the GM part number molded into it, but I really don't know.
Thanks for the input,
Dane

I just installed a repro wheel on a 69 Chevelle last week, but I don't recall if it had this number under it. And I don't feel like taking it off just to see. But my memory tells me that it is there. Why don't you call one of the places that sells the aftermarket wheel and ask them if this number is on it.
fwiw, the wheel that I installed looked like it was molded from an original wheel that had hairline cracks. You could see changes in the mold that looked like it replicated the cracks in the wheel that they used to make the mold. It didn't look real good to me.....
