: Help Identify camshaft please

I have this older cam that came out of my 355 that was put togather by my cousin about 10 years ago. I need help to identify it.
The only thing stamped on the end of it is on the distributor end, the ? are unreadable letters.

ERSON
H ? F L 11H
587

How can I tell what this cam is by measurements? I have a really good set of calipers and micrometer, could I do it with that?
I did measure one set of intake and exhaust lobes quickly and they both came out at 1.510" at the biggest point. Would that mean it is a single pattern cam?
Thanks for any info,
Mike

Probably....

But what you have to do to get the lift is make another measurement, at right angles to the toe-to-heel. Measure across the narrowest part of the lobe, which will be at a right-angle to the toe-to-heel, and subtract that measurement from the toe-to-heel measurement. That tells you the approximate lobe lift. It is only approximate because you may have .002"-.003" of ramp in the side-to-side, and it makes the lift look a little smaller.
Once you know the lobe lift, call Erson and ask them what cam it is. The '11H' means 111 LSA Hydraulic. That should be enough for them to ID your cam.

ok, I did that and got roughly .300" difference. Can that be right? This came was a pretty rough idler in the engine.

Thanks UDHarold,

.300 x 1.52 = .456" lift at the valve.

Probably an Erson, Hi-Flow AH.

Spec's; 284/220, 107/111, .472" hy-cam.

(And maybe 284/218 if it is older??)..

I have a brand new BB one.

thank you all, very helpfull. Now I have one more quesiton. I have put this on other s10 sites, but not alot of help so far. so I'll just cut and paste.

Would this Erson work for me, and if so, what's the right way to break in a used cam with new lifters?

I need help choosing the correct cam for my Blazer. Here are the Blazer's specs:

1993 4wd

fiberglass hood, No ABS stuff

4:10 gears and 33" tires

700r4 w/1900 GM Corvette converter

1990 Bone Stock 350, was a TBI, but I'll just be using the block and the rotating assembly. Remember, all stock!!!

a older set of 350 heads, 2.02 int, 1.64 ex. heads will be cut to achieve a final 9.5:1 compression ratio, mild cleanup job. 1.6 Harland Sharp stud mount full roller rockers/guidplates and 3 angle valve job

Weind Team G intake, open plenum with Carb adapter for a tuned Quadrajet

Don't know about headers yet, but would like the Super Comps. Will run dual 3" pipes with bullets, no cats

I know the compression is a "bit" low, but that's what I'm working with. I figure the open plenum and the low compression will be oK with the 4.11's and the deep first gear of the 700r4, plus the 1900 stall.

Here's a few I am looking at:

Hydraulic Crower Compu-pro

Lobe Centerline 112* 280/286 Adv. Duration
220/26 Duration @ .050" .462/.470 lift

Crower Solid

Lobe Centerline 112* 264/270 Adv. Duration
230/236 Duration @ .050" .458/468 lift

Comp Magnum Solid

Lobe Centerline 110* 282/282 Adv. Duration
236/236 @ .050" .495/.495 lift

As you can see, they are low lift (which I'd like to get around .500") except the last one. Only the last cam is a single pattern, the others are Dual pattern cams. I don't mind having to adjust the solids, so don't factor that in to your advice. What are your opinions on the cams listed or others you have in mind?
Thanks,
Mike

CC 282S should do you fine, imho...

I think I'd go with the Crower Solid. It will matchup with the lower CR you have. Even with the gears, I think it is the better match.

ok guys, I got word back from erson.

he said it is a
"hi-flow-2h" lift at valve is .475
duration is 306/306 dur @ .050" is 235/235
lobe sep. is 108
he says rpm range is 3200-6400.

This is a single pattern cam, correct? Would I be better of with single pattern or dual pattern? Does anyone sell camshaft kits with lifters, and valvesprings?

Here is what I still need:

cam, if I can't reuse my Erson
lifters
valve springs/retainers
timing chain set

thanks again,
Mike

ok, I checked out the erson catalog, and don't see a "2h" so I'm gonna assume it is a "11H"

How soggy will my 2000+ rpm's be with this one?
