I have a numbers matching 67 SS 396/350 with numbers matching M-21. I have two issues. First the car runs hot after the 5-10 miles. I have replaced the thermostat and added new antifreeze. This seemed to help but it still runs hot. My next step is to replace the original radiator with a new original replacement radiator assuming my orignial is partially plugged. Any other ideas? Engine pers like a kitten and I am afraid of damaging the numbers matching block by overheating it. Second problem is oil leaks from the transmission. Whenever I drive the car I end up with oil scattered on the trans, exhaust and anything else close to the transmission. I can't see any particular area that is leaking. It just appears it is leaking from the gaskets and seals. Trans works perfect and shifts well, but leaks and I can't stand it. I think it must need to be disassembled and put back together with new seals and gaskets. It is not over filled. Any ideas or recommendations on who can do this so I am confident I will get my original trans back in one piece.

Thanks,

Gary D.

Just a couple of suggestions. On the overheating, it does have a shroud for the fan doesn't it? If not that could cause overheating. Secondly it could be a problem with the fan itself if it is a clutch fan. Of course it could be a clogged radiator.
On the transmission. Why not just remove the trans yourself and do a freshen up yourself. They are somewhat easy to disassemble and rebuild. Kits are available from members here or from other sources. I don't remeber where I got it but I have a video that shows step by step disassemble, rebuild and reassemble of a Muncie trans. Pretty easy project. I think only special tool that was needed was a press to remove all the gears off the shaft and it is not needed to reassemble.

Went and looked up the info on the Muncie rebuild video. It can be purchased through the following website www.5speeds.com (http://www.5speeds.com). I think that company also sells Muncie parts, rebuild kits and entire transmissions. Can even buy a kit to convert your trans over to a rockcrusher if desired.
As far as someone reliable to do a rebuild if you don't care to do it yourself I've heard people around here recommend Hoss Gear Shop which is located about 40 miles east of Pittsburgh. I've heard he does excellent work and is very knowlegable on the Muncies. His number is (724) 423-6502.
I did my trans myself but did have an opportunity to contact Hoss's to obtain an input shaft. The guy went out of his way to help me out. Very nice people. I do know some other members on this site that have had rebuild work done there.

Retarded timing can also cause overheating.

There's a couple of members over in the Transmission & Driveline Forum that can fix you up with parts or complete refresh.

I live near Hoss' Gear Shop and he has buid a couple rear ends for me, 10 bolts and 9 inch ford and a Muncie M-20. I don't think anyone knows more on rears and 4 speeds than Keith. Honest, knowledgeable, realiable, helpful.

Gary...Where in Michigan are you located? I can recommend a trans guy around the Flint area.
