: Late model serpentine belt system conversion

Hey Men,

I am pondering taking a serpentine belt system off a newer silverado/blazer/s10 or whatever and putting it in the chevelle.

350 engine
1970 ss clone
everything has stock brackets/fan/fan shroud etc.....

A couple questions:

1. Will I have to use the water pump that the belt system used, or can I just use the pulley off the pump and retain the stock pump?

2. Can I use the alternator that I have now? or do I need to use the alternator that the belt system used? Will it be internally regulated (circa late 90's small block belt system)?

3. I have tall valve covers, will the AC compressor for the late model belt system hit the covers? (assuming i am using the ac compressor used on the late model belt system)

4. What modifications do I need to do to the AC hoses to fit the late model compressor to the stock AC/Heater system?

5. Will I need to change my power steering pump, or can I just use the one I have with the serp belt pulley? (will the late model serp belt pulley fit on a stock saginaw?)

Thanks for any help you guys,

Ray Cecil

I can help with a few answers.
1 You need the reverse rotation water pump
2 Those brackets are for the CS style alternator
3 Good question
4 Make new hoses
5 Your power steering pump will work

Dave, thanks man. I guess I will just have to see if the compressor will fit right and makes changes accordingly.

What do you mean by reverse rotation water pump? Does the belt drive the pump in the opposite direction with the serp system vs. the stock one?

Yes the serp. system used on those light duty Pick ups etc, the water pump is reverse rotation.

just get everything that bolts to the front of the engine in the donor vehicle- including the alternator plug with a few inches of wiring- and put all of that onto your car. if you swap the fitting in the back of the PS pump with your old one, you can even retain your stock PS lines.
it is a really easy swap, with the only real custom work being maybe the ac lines- but if you get a serp system out of an Astro van, then the AC pump and alternator will be in about the same place as your stock setup so maybe- just maybe- your stock ac lines might hook right up. then it's just a simple matter of wiring the alternator, which is only a couple of wires.

Awesome. I have a question now. What model year astro van? Any year?

Chevy Pick Up or Astro Van all the same. You are talking about the big horse bracket correct? They used this 88-approx 92, then they went to an aluminum style 2 piece.

Lots of Astro Vans are out there in the U-Pick yards.

the Astro vans had a unique setup with the AC compressor and alternator switched around compared to everything else with a serpentine setup, and at least some of the AWD vans had a remote reservoir PS pump and smaller Sanden looking AC compressor installed.
but whatever is used for a parts donor- make sure you get EVERYTHING off that vehicle. the Caprices were different than the Vettes which were different than the Camaros which were different than the fullsize trucks which were different than the S series trucks which were different than the Astros.. and there were different variations on each setup over the years with not only different brackets, but also pulleys with different offsets.

yep- any serp setup off any 4.3, 305, or 350 will work- just make sure to get everything- including the bolts and studs and braces and what not- from that vehicle and write down what year and model it was so you can get things like belts and replacement alternators for it down the road.
