Yeah ,you've got some reading to do.
Transmissions are rated for torque not horsepower.
Here's some info & TQ ratings for the T56:

And here's the TKO:

And here's a kit:

I run one of these upgraded T56s and love it! http://www.rsgear.com/GM.asp
I have a 3,700 lb wagon and a 545 hp/500 ft-lb SBC ahead of it.
It's installed with a kit from www.t56kit.com
The LT1 T56 bellhousings/cases bolt right up since they used a traditional Chevy bolt pattern (newer LS units are different and have different input shaft lengths)
So you want an LT1 unit that will install easily.
This just came out: http://www.mcleodind.com/products/8710-15_LT_SFI_Bellhousing.html
Now I want to replace my stock bellhousing!

Nice to see MacLeod stepped up with the LT1 bellhousing. Have to add that to my wishlist for my BBC/LT1 T56 setup.

Oh- one more quick mention. You know you'll have to cut out and replace the trans tunnel from the firewall to the rear yoke on the new transmission, right? That's about halfway through the passenger compartment.
Totally worth the effort, by the way...!

Thanks for info. Have some rust issues on the floorboards. Good time to figure trans. tunnel out.
