: 402 potential?

My 70 SS has the 350 horse 402. Some time in the past the previous owner slapped on a set of rectangle port heads ('67 vintage). Car is a 4 speed with 4.11's. Have any of you guys started with a similar base and gotten into the mid-lo 12's? I'm curious as to modern cam/intake/carb combo's for this performance level. I have no idea what cam is in there now, and the intake is an old torker 2-r. Carb is a 3310 holley. Thanks.

Performer RPM intake,,,750 cfm Holley HP series or the classic double pumper,,, Comp XE line of cams or Lunati,Crane equivalent.

I would buy a 454 to build up. Get some oval ports to put back on the 402 and keep it as a backup. I have a 66 and 67 chevelles have a 502(600HP) and 468 (500+), but also have a 9.5 to 1 396 with mild cam. If your heads are 67 #391 heads sell them and use the $$$$$$ to build a 500HP motor. Its easy to do with a 454 with no high dollar parts.

Yes they are #391 heads. What are they worth roughly?

Never mind, I saw what they are worth on Ebay.

Jungle Jimmie (hasn't posted in awhile) has ran 11.80's with a 402
I think you're missing the point. You know how many cruise nights and car shows have 396 powered cars that have never seen the track, and probably have mismatched combos? IMHO and experiece, any car that runs mid 12's be it small block or big block, and remains streetable is cool in my book.

I wouldn't want to start a debate about SBC vs BBC here, not my intention. I built my 402 because it was what I had. If i could have found a reasonable core for a 454 i would have built that. Can a 355 run 11's in a 3900lb car? sure, but the combo, motor only, combo becomes more radical to do so. Steeper gears looser converter. Look up the 408 comparo done by CHP back in '98. My combo runs 11's with a 2400 stall converter and overdrive, Idles at 700 in gear and will tug my heavy car around at 1800rpm's with the converter locked up, try that with an 11 sec 355.

...by the way, I'm putting 350 HP to the ground with a mismatched cam. The 'little big blocks' have great potential. Also, Todd Geisler is square in the 10's with his, N/A.

I have seen #391 SQ ports sell upwards of $2000 a set. There the highest priced of the old closed chamber SQ ports......THANX to the corvette guys. If there in good running condition I would pull them off and sell them. $2000 would build a nice 454 core up to 500+ HP. Not trying to knock the 396/402 but they cost just as much to build as the 454 and U will get more HP/torque out of the 454. The going price for a 454 core long block in michigan is about $500, but if U search around U can find em cheaper 250-400 range. The early to mid 70's motors are the best to build but are getting harder and harder to find. They had the #049 or #781 heads on them great street heads.

also, if you're only running 13.30's you aren't getting anywhere near 350hp to the rear tires. i ran faster than that with a stock flattop 355, and it might have been 350hp at the flywheel, probably around 280-290hp to the tires.
