I have a friend who is a big Chevelle enthusiast. Claims his Original 72' 454 LS5 Chevelle has an aluminum winters gm oval port Q-jet style intake. Is this correct, did they make these with a late 71 to 72 date code?

That intake is for '68 to '69 427 Vettes originally.

THAT IS EXACTLY CORRECT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Nothing else!
That intake MAY be on his 72 454, but that ain't where it came from!

Its probably worth more then an original 72 LS5 intake anyways.

Absolutely!!!!!!!
As mentioned, this was a 2yr ONLY manifold! And ONLY on Vettes. Thus, there is not a lot of them available.
Quite honestly, Chev SHOULD have installed this manifold on their LS5 cars in my opinion.
When I cloned the 71 SS454 for my son several years ago, this was the exact manifold that I installed on his engine. It took a while to find one too!
For a mild performance, dressed up, factory look with a Q-jet, that is a PERFECT manifold--------------------actually, that's probably why the guy put it on his engine to begin with----------------I don't blame him! :D

My 454 ran a 12.15 @ 110 with one in a 3940 pound car (including driver).

The 427/390 horse L-36 intake
Three casting numbers....

3919849 68 model Vette through Mar
3937793 later Mar 68 intro
3947801 1969 cars
This info from Colvin's Chevy by the Numbers and consistant with my own Vette research.
Only 10,000 and change 427/390 L-36 in 68 and about the same 10,000 ++ in 69....
I too wonder why these were not used in the 70-72 vehicles.....

How would a '66 factory high-rise cast iron QJ intake stack up performance wise against one of the three above mentioned Vette aluminum QJ intakes?

Dan,
I'm sure quite well.
I think a lot (maybe most) people discount the flow characteristics of a cast iron intake manifold. I don't remember for sure which years/models received them, but there were also some hi-rise iron manifolds with Holley bolt patterns for BBs. These manifolds appear to have similar, if not the same runners as their alum counterparts! The late 60s/early 70s iron Q-jet manifolds that were used on 327s and 350s seem to have excellent flow characteristics, and for a nice street/performance 350/400 with a Q-jet, these are among my favorite manifolds. Whenever I see one at a swap meet (ESPECIALLY if it has the hole for the oil filler tube) I usually can pick them up for about $10.

That's kinda what I was thinking too, Tom. I've read that the high rise CI 4BL factory intakes are not bad at all. And since the 3 Winters intakes mentioned above are all the "flat" designs I have to think the high rise CI's flow as well, or better, than those.

The application will be my 396/325 dressed 489 that's currently under development. Want to run a QJ, as well as the factory divorced choke.

Thanks,

Dan
