: Anyone Running 5000 stall on the street?
SSchevy400 Oct 10th, 04, 12:52 PM Well my buddy got me my TCI 5000 STall converter last week and today i'm yanking my tranny out to install it. My car sees the street maybe 2 times a month...I'm just curious to see who here has a 5000 stall on the street and what kind of cooler you are running? I'm thinking about getting a smaller electric fan to hook up to my cooler so it'll stay as cool as i can get it. Anyone have any comments?
Thanks
Ed
RIPPERS 67 Oct 10th, 04, 1:10 PM i ran a 5000 stall behind my 468 on the street. i used to bring it out on weekends alot before i tore it back down. i avoided going up hills and i ran the biggest cooler that b&m offered. run a transmission temperature gauge that is a must.i wouldnt drive to far with it though. they do create alot of heat. for me it was hard to cruise with this stall because i always wanted to put my foot through the floor and when that happend the transmission would heat up real quick.
cmt454 Oct 10th, 04, 1:12 PM I have an 8" BTE Converter I drive on the street. Flashes to about 4300. 4.10 rear end. I run semi-synthetic Mercon Fluid and have a large summit brand tranny cooler. I have a temp gauge in the pan and I have not seen temps over ~140 degrees. I have not made it to the track for other issues I have going on, so I dont know how hot it will get after a pass. I think a full synthetic will help keep things cooler. Transman (Steve Oldani) says that temps under 200 in the pan is where you want to be. Over that you start running into problems
ss406ci Oct 10th, 04, 1:20 PM I just swapped out my 406ci sb and put a 383 stroker in along with a TCI 5000 stall converter. my car also see's the road about twice a month. my chevelle weighs just under 3,300 lbs with me in it, and is primarlly set up for the strip. all i use is a B&M trans cooler , mounted low and in front of the radiater. i have not had any problems with the motor or tranny getting hot...

Motor Martyr Oct 10th, 04, 1:36 PM sell it and buy an 8" ATI Treemaster.
godsend Oct 10th, 04, 2:00 PM I have 5000 stall on N20 but only 3500 without. Never been over 130F with a little cooler.
Sell these yunk converters that stalls with no load. A good Converter will not stall unless you load it with power.
Should be tight and ship your tires when going into gear.
Using an 10" A1 converter for around 1400$ great buy. used boring off shelf converters before.

marooned Oct 10th, 04, 2:52 PM I've been running a 5000 stall Coan converter for the last three years. Got the big Perm-cool tranny cooler with the Deep TCI finned tranny pan. I've stopped and checked it when driving on 95 degree days with a digital temp gun and it's never been over 190 degrees.
Driving on the street or traveling 50+ miles each way to a car show has never been an issue.
If you plan on running that much stall pay for the extras that allow you to do it. Cooler was $189 from Jeg's (AN fittings)Pan's about $110.
I drop the pan and change the filter every Winter, all's nice and pink.
SSchevy400 Oct 10th, 04, 2:59 PM Thats everybody...Yes I actually have the biggest cooler from B&M...but may go with electric fan just for the tranny cooler. The deeper pan with fins is something i never thought about...Hmmmm Sounds like a plan...Thanks again Guys
I'm going to get a temp gauge, anyone like one better than the others? Where do they read the temp? at the line? or in the tranny?

slpin Oct 10th, 04, 4:13 PM here comes the only 1 and only way to run 11s....
SSchevy400 Oct 10th, 04, 4:33 PM Hmmm did I start a theres only one way to do something post again? :(
for all of you that MUST know why my car is not running what it should.....I have stock heads from 1971....i have a missmatched converter...and a 26 inch slick...too much carb...and a stumble. You can bust on my car all you want...but i'm not done with it. When i say i'm done and the combo is perfect, feel free to shove all the BS is my face. Untill then worry about your own car, and shut your face. Because anyone that has to put me and my car down because i'm not as fast as your BSE383 can just ignore my posts. I would rather take advise form someone who wants to help, and not someone that reminds me of Adolf Hitler....Thank you everyone that replied to my post! most of you that is

Bob West Oct 10th, 04, 4:33 PM Any suggestions on what is better than what I have now?!?!? You crack me up I thought he did that by recommending the ATI converter over the TCI converter
All that and it runs mid 12's? you might want to listen to Brian or Norm ;)
70_chevelle Oct 10th, 04, 5:02 PM Track elevation and local weather play a huge part in what cars will run. I'm at a high altitude track of 4400 feet but our corrected DA most the year is over 7000 feet. You cannot compare car performance unless you take this into account. With us going just to Boise we drop over .5 from our track. I have no idea what Motor Martyr or SSchevy400's DA is at their tracks but you have to have this information in order to see if the car in question is performing as expected.
Motor Martyr, what was your DA when you ran your 11.60?

I meant it By "What car he thinks i should buy?"
Bob West Oct 10th, 04, 5:10 PM Weight plays a big part in performance too,but I imagine their Nova and Camaros are comparable in weight. Ole "blank shootin Norm" truly has a mighty mouse in that heavyweight Chevelle of his, I never thought a 65 would weigh that much.

Lee 2000' during an event in the middle of August no less.
And guess what me and SuperSlowchevy both ran our times at ATCO, however he ran at the beginning of the year.

It seems you've had alot of good suggestions "crack you up" otherwise you wouldnt be turning mid 12's with a 14:1 383" motor in a 3000lb nova! Your sounding more and more like you know who, does it make you guys fell better or something? I surely would hate to go through life with everyone hating me and laughing behind my back, that would truley suck. I spend my time honorably and make friends that will be with me for a lifetime and most likely forever after....
You guys ought to give it a try, it really does work and is a whole lot funner.
Lee </font>[/QUOTE]Who hates me? i have plenty of friends in the racing industry, and plenty here locally. There are more then a few cars locally or otherwise that are going QUICKER AND FASTER taking My advice. I've spent entire weekends tuning and wreching on cars owned by friends of mine here locally, or more then appreciate my advice and suggestions.
But then again, i choose to offer suggestions to anyone who asks, and if you are smart and take my advice, i'll continue with further help.
Just because "SSchevy400" and yourself, do not like to listen to good advice....noted by the 3 pages of replies to 3 different posts where you are attempting to figure out how to get a chevelle to hook (at 7000' no less).
You and him are turning a good suggestion into a war.
You dont like my suggestions, its quite simple. You say "thanks for the suggestion" and move on. I really could care less if you take my advice, but to insult me for offering good Advice is when i get irritated.

Bob West Oct 10th, 04, 6:42 PM It sounds like Ed is crying to me, ya gotta be able to take constructive criticism, or you'll just be a wannabe.
marooned Oct 10th, 04, 7:32 PM This is real easy to resolve.
The question was is anyone out there running 5000 stall on the street?
If your not, or you never have, Why did you respond?
Let's let this thing die.
I almost didn't renew my membership this year because of this crap.
This is supposed to be fun guys. Don't take it so personal.
Oldani Motorsports Oct 10th, 04, 7:37 PM No problems running a converter like that on the street if all is properly set up. Years ago in my '68 Chevy 2 I had a .020" over 302" with a Glide and ran an 8" converter that flashed to 5K. I did not use the cooler in the radiator at all, but just an external cooler. Never had any heat issues, and the car was driven every day the weather was nice, and even 15+ miles each way to college on nice days. The car ran low 11's when it was street driven and then when I leaned on it in good air it went into the 10.80's. As for whose brand of converter is the best, that is about like asking someone what their favorite brand of beer is, lol. Most of the companies out there all make a good quality product with few exceptions. I have seen probably more trannies and converters than most and can only single out GER as one I would NEVER recommend to anyone. I have been quite happy with the BTE stuff, and also TCI. But, you need to know a bit about converters and combos to get things optimized. You also need to look for good customer support if things do not work to your satisfaction, and I have seen that from all three places whose products I have sold.
70_chevelle Oct 10th, 04, 7:47 PM Your suggestions are fine, we can all take them or leave them.

Nickel333 Oct 11th, 04, 12:43 AM I gotta go with Brian on this one, he just simply suggested somthing. Dont take ideas so personally. Hes suggested things to me before that i dont necessarily agree with, yet i dont call him a dumb ass, little *****, son of a b***h, that id love to drive the 20+ hours all the way up to "Joisey" and strangle his little F****n' neck and poop on Ed's windsheild. Have I Brian??? graemlins/clonk.gif Geese guys lighten up :D
Motor Martyr Oct 11th, 04, 1:13 AM thanks Nick :D lol, you're one crazy som bytch, you'd fit in perfect over here in Joisey.
Adam Loose Oct 11th, 04, 10:04 AM I ran a Dynamic 8" 5500 stall in my 70 prostreet nova behind my 408" SBC with a PG.The motor made 600 hp,and I had 5.13's with 32" tall tires.I had a medium sized tranny cooler mounted up front in front of the aluminum radiator. The farthest I would drive was about 15 miles to a local cruise spot, and most of it highway. The car always ran cool(160 thermostat),and it was hitting between 3000-3500 rpms at about 50 mph depending if it was uphill.
