: how much oil press is enuff?
Mr.McFast Aug 23rd, 04, 5:49 PM ok the last couple times i been driving my car after i drive it about 5 or so miles and its warmed up and stuff and when it is idleing i have about 5psi or below if i rev it to about 2000 rpms its about 25psi what gives.....what do u guys think about it??? :confused:
ddeennis Aug 23rd, 04, 6:02 PM i would say clearences are way out.....has it always done this.......i myself wouldnt even drive it....thats to low for me.....i'm rebuilding or looking for the problem if its below 20 psi at say 600 rpms........
Mr.McFast Aug 23rd, 04, 6:10 PM well its kinda just started losing psi past couple weeks.... started gettin a little lower then my cam went flat put new cam in and stuff and its been this low the past week or so.....im really affraid that its gonna have to be rebuilt....just cause its that low...when i first start it up its about 45 or so but as the oil gets thinner i guess it gets lower.....would a high volume oil pump help or what?????
Pat Kelley Aug 23rd, 04, 6:18 PM Did you take the engine apart and clean it after the flat cam. If not, the metal in the oil system could have been too much for the bearings.
blaauboer Aug 23rd, 04, 6:27 PM Check your gauge and oil line going to the gauge....I just took mine apart and put all new bearings in with about the same pressure you have....If you had a cam problem then the chances of you having cam bearing problems are pretty darn good......Take the filter off and cut it apart and see if there is any metal in it...Good luck......
Mr.McFast Aug 23rd, 04, 6:34 PM we put a new filter on it..... should the new one have metal in it if it had metal in the it.....but i know where the old filter is..... this really sux....
Mr.McFast Aug 23rd, 04, 7:41 PM i put a cheapo oil filter on it when we broke in the cam so im going to get a good filter and some good oil....we put some penzoil in it and was told that it was total crap so im going to get the castol gtx 10 40 hoping itll bring it up some with a little bit thicker oil....
possibly the cheap filter collapesd and is stoped up.....

ssal396 Aug 23rd, 04, 8:57 PM FYI, This is what a 2 hour old bearing looked like when my cam went bad.. I hate to bring bad news, but I would pull it & clean everything, & replace the bearings... Just my $.02

me and my dad was talkin about that if nething needed to be done to it maybe sell my other 69 and get a 454 to build up something streetable but something that would kick@ss how much do yall think i could get a good 454 with a healthy cam and a good intake and carb i want about 450 or so hp and tq so id be able to run high 12s

If you take an oil sample {after you cut your filter and establish that there are no filings in there}, you could run your oil, pull some out of the engine and take it to your Caterpillar dealer, and have an oil analysis done. The cost is not too bad at all. What do you guys think of that idea?
Mr.McFast Aug 23rd, 04, 11:07 PM i guarenttee there was filings in the filter cause i had 3 lobes ate off the cam....lol how much does it cost to get the cam bearings changed......
ssal396 Aug 24th, 04, 10:14 AM The killer is, it's not just the cam beaarings, in fact, my cam bearings were fine.. That pic that I posted was a rod bearing. About 1/2 of the main & rod bearings were trashed. You wouldn't beleive how much metal I pulled out of the engine, as well as the heads, and every engine component.. :eek: & I only lost 1 lobe....

Mr.McFast Aug 24th, 04, 8:38 PM welll i got anew gauge and tryed it no luck.... changed oil and filter and stuff and drove it and its now down to 2psi or so......I guess that mean its time to take her out and rebuild here and stuff.......gotta sell my other 69 project car to pay for the stuff togo in the new motor....
should i just go for a set of keith blacks and stuff in a kit or should i get a 383 stroker kit????
