Thanks for your reply on previous post.I was wondering if I could use my 186 casting heads from previous post for a 383 stroker. This is my daily driver 72 Chevelle.I would like to use flat-top pistons and zero-deck the block.I guess what I am trying to say is would compression be ok for everyday? :D Thanks!!!!!

The 186 casting is about 64cc's & will not be a good choice on a 383 for a driver with a flat top.
You will be at about 11.0 with a flat top at zero deck.
They will be pretty decent if you use a reverse dome piston with about 15 to 18cc's & a cam about 270 advertised.

That's just what I did and it worked well.
I ran the Comp 268HE.I should have gone with the 270 Magnum or perhaps the Isky 274 Mega.
The 268HE made really good torque but it just didn't want to make any top end.Plus I think it was slightly too much compression for pump premium.
I think I was shifting at 5200.That was about 12 years ago so I could be off slightly.

Thanks for the reply,Wolfplace. So do you think a zero-decked 355 w/ flat-top pistons would be better w/ these heads?

If you are building from nothing why not just use the reverse dome piston & build your 383?
You will still have all the advantages of good quench ;)
SRP has a real nice 16cc dish piston.

Thanks again,I will look into that I am really green at building motors.Actually this will be my first time. I work on FORDS redface.gif for a living (job security). My specialty is under vehicle suspension and steering, also drive axles(rear ends ).

Wolfy knows what he is talking about.
It was just kinda dumb luck that I happened to build that 383 combo nearly 12 years ago.It was also my first engine build :D
My 186's were unported 194/150's.
In my 66 Nova with 3.08's I ran a 1.78 60ft, 12.78ET at 103.I remember it because I had to show all my friends who thought they had quick rides.
It would have gone quicker but I actually had to baby it a little out of the hole.It still broke the rear ;)
on 215/60-14 BFG Street tires no less.
That is a feat hard to believe with those skinny little street tires.
Other parts it had were Holley 650DP, Torker 2 intake (MISTAKE!), Hooker 1 5/8 Super Comp headers, and a full MSD Ignition system.
I wonder what it would have run with a little different parts selection....
Using parts available then,274 Mega, Holley 300-36 intake, pocket ported Sportsman 2's, and a set of slicks :D
