well im not sure on the chevelle chassis if you can do this or not........but on my camaro's i can undo the drive shaft, loosen the cross member bolts (outer 4 bolts), take out the 3 convertor bolts, take out the 6 tranny bolts, unhook the vacuum line, and two tranny lines on the radiator, support the engine under the oil pan with a jack and 2x4, and push the tranny back............pop of the convertor replace the front seal on the pump, put a quart of tranny fluid in the convertor and slide it on the input shaft........push tranny back into place......

takes me about 4 hours tinkering around, answering the phone, answer questions the kids have, telling the kids to stop fighting, going to the bathroom, getting something to drink, scratching my butt, rubbing crap out of my eyes, and laying on my back........lol

scratching my butt, rubbing crap out of my eyes Dude...you're doin it different than me! :D

But seriously, you might want to have a friend around that has done it before. A tranny is not a lightweight component. Be sure you have a set of jackstands, a trustworthy jack, a block of wood or 2....let's see...a drip pan, cuz when you pull the driveshaft and the tranny tilts backward, you will have a huge mess.

Don't be scared off, cuz just gettin out and doing it is the only way to learn. I've done it several times, but I like to have a friend around cuz I'm a scrawny guy. Be smart and be safe, first and foremost.

Once you do it a couple of times, it will be old hat. Remember to fill that converter up with tranny fluid before installing it. When you have it on the input shaft, you have to spin the converter by hand several revolutions to get it to fully seat. Also, make sure all your bolts are tight on the bellhousing, converter, crossmember, ect. prior to initial fire-up. Good luck and tell us how it turns out.! graemlins/thumbsup.gif

Probably not the headers but the exhaust pipes might cause trouble, depending on how it is installed. I had a tough time getting around them because of the H pipe. I should have unbolted the collector flange and drop the whole system first.

yep all these guys are on the right track, I have just finished up doing my 2nd tranny swap, on my '69 I had to take the whole exaust system down, because I have copper gaskets on my headers, I took them off so I had the clearence!!! You may or may not have to but I did. Good luck with it, It gets faster the more you do it!!

make sure the converter is all the way seated, you will have to turn the converter while pushing in on it to get it into its final resting place, I caught a friend last weekend about to put his in without seating it all the way, that would cause some headaches. otherwise its not that bad

Depending on what accesories are on the engine (PS, A/C, etc) sometimes it is faster to pull the engine...especially if you don't have any way to get the car high enough to work under it. On several old trucks I had, I could have the engine ready to pull in about an hour. I really, really hate working underneath a car or truck. Just support the tranny, and with the engine out the convertor is right there.

for some reason my motor is always a PITA to get abck in. it shouldnt bee to hard to pull the trans. i have individual pipes so i can just on bolt each and muove them to the side.
