: Just had the nitrous talk with the wife again
Kevin R Nov 16th, 08, 3:41 PM I just dont get it. I tell her that if I wanted to go with a solid roller cam set up the way I want to do it with jesel shaft rockers, isky EZ rollers, cam, heavy duty push rods, converter that it would cost over 2 grand. I said it would be cheaper to put a 125-150 shot of nitrous on it for 400 bucks. She said no to the nitrous and to just spend the money.:noway: I dont freaking get it:confused: As soon as I say the word nitrous its like talking to the wall..
I have been doing the math and lets say that with the upgrades I get another 50-75 HP at the crank divide that by 2500 bucks thats 33 bucks per HP. To me thats expensive HP. Now if I buy a 4 bolt block and a stroker kit the price for the build would be around 4000 and make around 675HP so it would only cost me out of pocket now $5.90 per HP So I need to spend more money to get a lower price per HP.:noway:
Nitrous to me is a no brain-er from more HP as it works out to be .31 cents per HP gain.... She keeps saying I though you bought this car to drive not to race and it seems like its turning into a race car. I said it can be both if I use nitrous. Off nitrous its a good street bruiser then hit the button and it turns into a bad ass 427 race car. Its really the best of both worlds. Now if I go with a bigger cam, converter and maybe gears well now its not such a great street car and more of a race car.
AAAAAARRRRRRRRRGGGGGG!!!!!!!!
So in conclusion I dont think Im going to change anything now. Just not worth the headache,, Might be time to just save money for a couple of years and buy something to race....
aukai Nov 16th, 08, 3:57 PM Just spend the money, make it bad NA. She must have seen a nitrous explosion or something.
FourEightyNine Nov 16th, 08, 4:19 PM She gives you the greenlight on the new performance stuff, and your complaining?....:D
Kevin R Nov 16th, 08, 4:26 PM She gives you the greenlight on the new performance stuff, and your complaining?....:D

66 Buick Special Nov 16th, 08, 4:28 PM uh... Kevin... you want me to bring over my nitrous tank?
You could use it to play "dentist" until she's "comfortable" enough to be agreeable to you purchasing a kit.:D
***Attention kids and mod's... The above statement was made in jest.
In no way do I advocate the use of non-medical grade nitrous oxide for use/consumption by humans. Cat's on the other hand...:p I'm kidding!:D
FourEightyNine Nov 16th, 08, 4:29 PM Another thing is...much is it nitrous $$ per pass? Then multiply it for how many passes you will do. Then decide how long the other peformance parts would last.
Nitrous might be more expensive in the long run.

No way, not with a little shot. Now a 400-500 shot, sure. Hard on parts.
You can't beat the cost for Nitrous and that one can keep it streetable and then hit the button and beat a race only combo.
Kevin could make his motor nasty and nearly unstreetable (Is there anything un streetable?) but keep it as is and through a easy 150 shot at it and run 10.50's all day long and drive it to the track.
Or, built the big cubic inch motor with the nasty big cam and compression, then through a 150 shot at it too.

Thats what I tell everyone but noooo my car is a race car not a street car:D
I do agree though the 427 then pop on the nitrous. Only bad part about that is....how long will 10.50s not be enough for you?
cobaltchev67 Nov 16th, 08, 5:41 PM Here's the real question....what is the motivating factor for her forbidding the nitrous? Ask her that, and maybe you'll get your answer. Maybe she needs more information....like how you make it safer, so it doesn't blow up in the car. Do you have a nitrous book? I've read quite extensively about it(in my SA Design book), and there are a ton of different things you can do to make it safer, and there's quite a bit you NEED to do to make it work correctly, like the fuel system upgrade.
'69Brian Nov 16th, 08, 5:51 PM Maybe she bought you a nitrous kit for Christmas and she doesn't want you to spoil the surprise!

Your thinking is correct. You cant beat Nitrous for a street machine. Just set it up correctly and you have nothing to worry about as long as your motor has good parts in it. I purchased a Chevelle that had a 275 hp shot on a 454 HO crate motor. It had some upper end mods to it also. The guy who owned it before me was a street racer and sprayed it quite a bit. Actually he sprayed it with a 325 hit a few times he said. I probably only hit it 10 times or so. it worked flawless. I was very impressed since it was my first nitrous experience. Anyway, I sold the 454 HO to a guy a couple years later. It was still running great. He tore the motor down and said everything looked new.
So, if you go the Nitrous route, just do it right and you'll be fine. I think your Wife is thinking nitrous is only for serious race cars only and that it is a highly explosive gas, which it is not.

If you can spend the money, why not just Pro Charge it and not worry about the juice? The power is there all the time and your motor should more than handle it.

Now were are back to the Price per HP cost. Prochargers are around 4500-5000 bucks then all the intercooler, carb , lower compression pistons ect... I would just build a 505ci that puts out 650-700HP for less than a procharger.
1966malibu Nov 16th, 08, 11:09 PM Good god Kevin just build the motor you want . your wife gave you the OK to get the good stuff for it anyway. Then when you are all done you will need to install a FIRE SUPPRESSION SYSTEM you know the kind with a bottle in the trunk area for safety :D. You could even show her how you have to purge it be for you make a run to insure the SYSTEM is fully charge. REMEMBER SAFETY IS NO ACCIDENT ;).

dontcha want to wear it out some before spending for a new mill?
there is probably more HP in the 427, the trick is finding it.
maybe I'm just just showing my age or my being tired of racing, after all I do have thousands of passes under my belt.
I gotta go back to bed now

Lot of 1/10ths available to you in getting that suspension setup, as both Bob & Brian have shown.

Hey Bill,
In my orignal post I said over 2 grand. The Jesel rockers I can get for 900 bucks, EZ lifters can be had for 700.... Thats 1600 plus 400 for a custom cam, push rods are 180 so 2180 for a cam upgrade with kick a$$ valve train.
I already did the research on these prices and they are real not just I think I can... Then add in a converter which if I just went with another RedNeck 4500 stall its 295 so now were are at 2475 then to take advantage I would have to go back to 4.56 gears so im in it another 450 as I know people:D So $2925 Well lets call it $3000 or a bit more cause there are alway small things you forget about like new 1/2" fuel pick up with 1/2 line to the new 172GPH fuel pump ect.....

BillsCamino Nov 17th, 08, 9:00 PM My Jesel Comp system was $1550 and the Isky lifters w/options cost $675...on sale!
Add to that...
A new S/R custom cam @ $450
Matching springs/retainers/cups/locks @ $740
Manton pushrods came in @ $300+
Timing set was $120.
Plus, the Coan converter actually was more than the TH400 w/T-brake which was purchased at the same time. Package deal w/shipping was just north of $2400.

You're right though...nitrous would be "cheaper" IF you've got the components to support the hit.

You know what I would do if I was you kevin, I would have the whole rollcage done and make the cross peice removable, that way you can be safe and take it out when you want to have people in the back. Then if you ever wanted to get real serious just weld the peice in.

Actually it has nothing to do with safety at all.:noway: Or even the fact that I will be going faster. Not the place to be discussing this but I understand her point. The fact of the matter is that Im lucky to have what I have and should just get the car together and run it for awhile. Also need to spend less time on the Internet researching stuff and paying more attention to the family. Im really going to try to spend a little less time on here. Im not going to disappear or anything but lets see if I can get control of my habit (well I like to call it a hobby). Ever since I bought this car it has taken control of my life pretty much. I love working on it, trying to make it faster, upgrading ect but I really need to learn to control it and not let it control me.
I really like the friends that I have made the last couple of years and everything that I have learned. I will try to limit my time on the Internet and team chevelle. Love you guys:thumbsup: but need to restore something more important in my life....:)

You have the right idea bro...take a chill pill and get your car dialed in first. But I plan to do the same thing....spray mine. Mine current set up has great street manners and works pretty good at the track. I was going to either Procharge it or go more radical heads/cam set up. But after lots of thought I am going the nitrous route.I would really like to keep the cars current manners and then spray it with a mild 100-150 shot for the track. That should get me some high 10's.
What does you car run now??

It actually runs really good. It has great street manners, revs like a small block and pulled in an 11.9 1/4 on motor. I really have nothing to complain about. But like most you get caught up in the wana go faster and faster but it just keeps costing more and more plus the time it takes to research, then do the work. It never really ends and I have a wife that really doesnt get it so its a tough one. In her mind you fix a car and drive it until it breaks again fix it ect.. Just doesnt understand the ongoing project - hobby of the classic car.

FRYNTYR Nov 19th, 08, 8:53 PM I think you'll be more than happy with it N/A and some 1/4 mile passes with the new auto. Enjoy it as is for a while, as hard as it may be, you will be rewarded with some sweet times and bragging rights.

It just means he either got lazy or he really can't chew gum and drive at the same time.:D I haven't had an automatic in 25 years.
Either way, Kevin's car is one to stand aside for, 11 sec and still streetable.
