: How about this carb?
Dave Aug 28th, 04, 2:22 PM I'm looking to get a carb for my 468, was thinking about this one. street avenger (http://store.summitracing.com/eproduct.asp?part=HLY%2D0%2D81770&N=120++%2D42057+%2D42161+303720)
It's a 468
Crane powermax 286 cam
781 heads stock valve size
KB domed piston's, 10:1 compression
Performer RPM intake
This is not for racing, street only. Is this carb to simplistic, not enough adjustability? Or should it work for a street only motor.
It's the carb on the bottom, 770 cfm, manual choke. Thanks for the help, Dave
Bob West Aug 28th, 04, 2:42 PM Why not just a regular vacuum secondary or DP 750 carb? I think I'd go that way with a street car. I'm not familiar with the Avengers. When did Holley quit making the one piece main body carb? Just take the top off, same idea as Edelbrock or QJ,no gaskets below the fuel level? I had one a looooong time ago.
pdq67 Aug 28th, 04, 5:56 PM Me thinks Holley simpified that family of carb's, (i.e., cheapened them), so much they just didn't live up to expectations BUT I think somebody did post that he got the one he was using to run great for the application.
I do know I would like to pick up one of the 800 cfm ones, (square or spread-bore (??)), if I can find a good one at a good price some day..

onebadd66 Aug 28th, 04, 6:31 PM I have the 770 Avenger on my 383,for the street, and have no problems with it at all.Have had the carb for about a year now.All I had to do was set the mixture.Runs great.
If your looking for "plug-n-play" They're a good carb.

Dave Aug 28th, 04, 10:44 PM Would 770 cfm be enough for a 468? I really am kind of looking for a good carb to just bolt on and run. I want to drive it and not have to tinker with it all the time, but will this give my engine what it needs to be a good strong runner. Dave
ak69 Aug 28th, 04, 10:50 PM I am using the 770 avenger on my car, it has performed well for me. With front power valve as issued, and jetted 74 front / 84 in back car runs bottom 12's with the light vac spring. Mine does have the electric choke which has worked well also. I have the carb off the car at this time, have a local guru tuning on it, his reccomends for my combo and intended use include larger nozzels, different front power valve, choke removal, vac secondary tuning beyond a simple spring swap, acelerator pump upgrade and replacing the Viton needle and seat with the stainless variety. He is wanting to swap jetting around as well. We have to wait and see the gains (if any) of these changes. I have been very happy with the carbs street manners, very responsive on my 454. I do know that it shows 0 on the vac gauge at wide open throttle, I think its a fair choice at an affordable price. Almost forgot.toss the cheap ass plastic bowl plugs / windows, them things aint worth having at best and may BURN YOUR CAR TO THE GROUND at worst  I am hoping that these carb changes will help reduce my 60' times by .1 and maybe a little MPH????
ak69 Aug 29th, 04, 11:23 AM That carb will do what you are looking for. Bolt it on and go. Comes with excellent instructions on getting it set up. Try it, I think you will like it.
onebadd66 Aug 29th, 04, 11:41 AM As Graig stated, great carb for get it and go.A good freind of mine has one on his big block as Holly stats this carb is supposed to support up to 500hp(were they arive at that?) but his motor is just south of 500 and it screams.
Just alittle side note,as stated I use that same carb on my motor, with old plugs,10deg of advance,
no tune up at all (carb or other wise),and it went 12:50's first time out.
You'll love it graemlins/thumbsup.gif

Dave Aug 29th, 04, 1:57 PM Thanks guy's, I guess I got that decision made. Dave
GRN69CHV Aug 30th, 04, 6:51 AM I run the 770 with the electric choke. Just need to let it warm up for 2 minutes to kick the choke off completely. Out of the box, the jetting and power valve are suitable for most applications, secondaries may want to go up 2 steps though. Vac. secondary spring change out is incredibly easy.
I do have an off idle stumble to address that has been there since day one. My converter and wheel spin mask it though. I think it probably needs a bigger squirter out of the box.
