: Running rich w/idle smoking

My 350 small block is running pretty rich and when idling I get quite a bit of white smoke from the exhaust. I've adjusted the carb, but that only helped a little.
Looking for some suggestions on what else to do since the engine is running fine otherwise.
Thanks in advance.

Spencer,

Welcome to Team Chevelle!

You should post what kind of carb you have, whether or not is has a working choke, etc....

Heavy white steamy smoke?

Running rich is usually a black smoke.
White Steamy smoke, water in the cylinders
Blueish looking, maybe considered white is oil.

Spencer,if you drive the car for 20-30 min. and stop, does the car continue to smoke?

More details as suggested by Pete:
Edelbrock double barrel carb with a working choke.

The smoke is usually pretty light in color and continues even after running for 20-30 minutes.
I usually don't see any smoke while driving, but I definitely see it when stopped and idling.
Heavy gasoline smell to the smoke as well, which is why my first thought was that it's running rich.

Tim has his colors right, but seeing that you live in CA... Is there a catalytic converter involved? Not sure what an afterburner does to throw the colors off.

If it is steam due to a blown head gasket, crack or such, you should be able to notice a drop in radiator water level. (DO NOT pull the cap on a hot engine -- I know everyone knows that, but I can't help repeating it).

Most radiator shops etc. have a little tester that is supposed to pick up on any combustion products in the cooling system.

Edelbrock 2BBL is news to me...??

If it smells heavy of gas, its way to rich. Could be float level, Carb size, Jets, metering rods. Make sure your plugs, wires and timing are correct too.
