: Helmets - Full face or open? Worried about fogging up
71boo Aug 18th, 04, 7:31 AM Well, I have now reached the 13 sec ET range, so I must get a helmet. I am considering a full face style helmet, but I am wondering if I will have problems with my breath fogging up the face sheild. Seems like it could get pretty dangerous trying to drive like that. Are the full face helmets made so they won't fog up? or do some folks use anti-fog chemicals (like on car windshields)? Can anyone suggest a decent, basic DOT approved/current Snell rated helmet?
THANKS in advance!
turbo Aug 18th, 04, 10:28 AM I wore my full face helmet when I was at the strip a few months ago, temp was in the 90's
No problem with fogging up and I wear glasses.
My brother and I have had a full face for three or four years. They have a breath gaurd that forces your breath away from the face shield. No problems with them fogging up. We got a G-Force helmet, by the way. It came from Summit or Jeg's, can't recall which. They're kind of expensive, but so are head injuries.
I got a full face helmet because my brother was doing all the driving at the time, and a '67 Chevelle doesn't have shoulder belts. I figured if his face ever went into the steering wheel, a full face helmet would make sure I had done my best job of protecting him.

aaron If it meets M95 or better standards. It has to have the proper lable inside.

71boo Aug 18th, 04, 1:42 PM Pat - u took yours off, now that is a thought. i want the full face protection, but i dont want a foggy face shield. i wonder since u have your full face still covered, even without the shield, would that would protect your face in an accident? in other words, even without the face shield, at least the helmet surface extends across the chin area. an open face helmet does not have that level of protection. i might just go ahead and get a full face snell SA2000 helmet, and just remove the face shield if i have problems with fogging.
THANKS! graemlins/thumbsup.gif
chevy_69_chevelle Aug 18th, 04, 3:12 PM I run a open face simpson helmet. Also I heard something going around in the tech lines at the last summit race about two new rule changes for next season.
1. Y-Belt harnesses will no longer be acceptable.
2. Something about an increase in the snell requirement for helmets (don't know all of the details). I have a snell2000 helmet, so I should be good for a while...just something to consider
kazuaki Aug 18th, 04, 3:18 PM I run a full face motorcycle helmet (I think M95) with the shield removed, just like Pat. I've been totally happy with it.

No destruction involved removing the shield, at least on mine. The helmet is made so the shield can be replaced.
75c10 Aug 19th, 04, 7:31 AM SHAVING CREAM!. Try this to see what I mean: Rub a small amount of shaving cream in a 3" circle on your bathroom mirror and let it steam up. The circle will not be steamed up like the rest of the mirror!. This is an old trick that is used by people who ski. You rub it on your lense, leave it sit for a minute, then wipe off completely dry!. :D
