: OK guys, give your honest opinion...
four o two Dec 1st, 04, 11:30 AM my engine is finally finished, and made 557 crank hp @ 6186 rpm, and 540 lb-ft @ 4700 rpm.
specs are:
.60 over 454
Demon 850 (tuned well)
Weiand Stealth intake
stock 1972 SS oval port heads (can't remember cast #) with 2.19/1.88 valves and some port/bowl work
COMP hydraulic roller - 244/252 & .612/.616
forged SRP pistons
forged TRW rods
forged crank
milodon oil pan
Heddman headers
3" exhaust w/ 3 chamber flowmasters
TH400 w/ 3000 stall
3.90 gears
GV overdrive
really... what should i expect with good traction? low 12's?
mr 4 speed Dec 1st, 04, 11:35 AM Low 12's/high 11's w/traction..and I'm sure it can be fine tuned to go quicker
427L88 Dec 1st, 04, 12:02 PM No way. I run low 12's with alot less HP, I think. Naw, that's an easy 11 second ride ONCE ( big Once) the chassis is set to 60' well. For a complete W-A-G, I'd say it'll run 118-120 mph and 11.50-12.00.
Harold Sutton Dec 1st, 04, 12:13 PM Mid elevens or a little quicker would be a pretty good guess in a '72 Chevelle which probably weighes 3800 pounds with a driver. Hydraulic roller will probably keep it out of the tens.
Yellow77 Dec 1st, 04, 2:44 PM Wow, this is freaky. You built my motor's twin. Only real differences is that my roller has a little less lift and a different intake. Power peaks were almost exactly the same. I'd guess at least mid/high 11's. I'm shooting for high, high 11's in a 4400 lb car but that might be a little optimistic. How fast do you guys think this would go w/ a 300 shot at 4400 lbs? Or would a 300 shot nuke stuff in a hurry?
Ron454 Dec 1st, 04, 3:14 PM My previous 454 on the dyno made 561 hp @ 6400 and 540 ft lbs at 4600. In my 3550 lb Nova it ran a best of 10.9 @ 122. Always ran around 11.0.
10" converter, 4.10 gears, full 3" exhaust.
So Id say your Chevelle ought to hit 11.4 pretty easy at 118+.

zl-1madness Dec 1st, 04, 3:25 PM id start with a 150 shot it takes some good componets to shoot 300 and a well built motor with proper ring gaps and maybe some pressure relief holes in top of the pistons to allow the pressure to push the rings outward. in my experiance id say look for times in the 11.70 to 11.90 with tuning and traction give or take a 1/2 a second. and who know maybe lower . enjoy what you got and by all means re evaluate your motor and the 300 shot
four o two Dec 1st, 04, 4:55 PM thanks for the input guys... the motor's broken in after about 20 dyno pulls (engine dyno) and about 2 weeks worth of driving. i've just now started romping around on it on some lonely stretches of highway. first few things i've noticed:
#1 - first gear is useless with BFG Radial TA's
#2 - i need a REV LIMITER! the thing revs so fast, especially when the tires break loose, that i have to let off completely for fear of over-revving the thing
#3 - it feels like it has so much down low, that if i did make it dead hook from a stop, it feels like it would destroy and axle or the rear end. not sure how up to snuff those stock components are when it comes to that kind of abuse...
what should i invest in suspension/axle-wise? i have a custom-shortened driveshaft because of the GV unit. would an aluminum one help a little? the suspension is totally stock as it is. only thing it has are some KYB shocks (rear are air) and polyurethane body bushings.

mr 4 speed Dec 2nd, 04, 8:45 AM I'd buy some DOT tires or drag radials first.
Stock F41 suspensions with just sticky tires can pull off some pretty impressive 60 ft. times

Four o two: be sure to let us know when you get some timeslips. I'll be real curious. And DEFINITELY get yourself an MSD box w/ a rev limiter. Especially if you're cruising around on Radial T/A's smile.gif
427L88 Dec 2nd, 04, 9:35 AM For sure, if you start monkeying around frequently on slicks, recommend you look into replaceing the rear yoke with a 1350-sized one and having Denny's make a Nitrous-ready shaft for you ( or analogous shaft). Ya got some real power there, especially when it sticks!

Were those numbers through the Flowmasters?

Were those numbers through the Flowmasters? no, they were thru some custom headers and mufflers on the dyno, so i'm sure it makes a tad less now... :(
and guys, where could i go to find out how much exactly my car weighs? i'd like to know the exact #...
four o two Dec 5th, 04, 1:32 PM ttt - any chance you guys would know of a place where i could go to get the car weighed?

MadMarv Dec 5th, 04, 2:35 PM Four o..
Not an apples to apples, but I have a 70ss, 4000lb, Th400, GV, and 3.90s and with a smaller but more lift hyd roller (w/ rect heads and 10:1) it put out about the same numbers on a similar dyno setup and went high 11's with a very slow 1.8x 60' and pretty dismal mph (113). so despite whatever gremlins I have, you can do atleast that well if not quite a bit better, assuming you are gremlin free..
I did my first weigh at a truck stop, all subsequent weighs at the track-- truck stop was reasonably accurate. I bet you will have alot of fun, but ditto on the rev limiter, esp if you want to push that shift lever yourself. With my luck, I'd stick to what others say..
Matt
i don't think you'll ever get it hooked up real good with that much power and stock suspension. but you'll need tires first.
