which posi are you refering to? if 12 bolt eaton, pat close attention to how the cross pin lines up with the spider gears. if either of the gears do not allign, this is when you need to shim to correct the allignment. it helps put an even load on both clutch sets. tom

What do you mean by rebuild it?
Are you just going to rebuild the INSIDE of the posi unit, or, are you going to completely pull it out and also replace the side carrier bearings?
If you are NOT going to replace the side carrier bearings, you DO NOT need to remove the posi unit from the axle housing.
Pull the pin, remove the C-clips and remove the posi guts--------------------PAY CAREFULL ATTENTION TO HOW ALL THE PARTS CAME OUT. Then you can install new clutches, clips and springs.

If you are going to rebuilt the guts of the posi, AND, install new side carrier bearings, then that means pulling out the posi unit from the axle housing. When you pull out the posi unit, there will be shims/spacers on each side of the posi. KEEP THESE SHIMS/SPACERS ORGANIZED IN THEIR SAME ORDER FOR RE-INSTALLATION!!!! VERY, VERY probably you will be just fine to re-install the same shims/spacers on the sides of the carrier bearings.
