I was flipping through the chanels the other day and say the new Toyota pickup commercial . There are two different ones. In one, they show an 80's Toyota pickup on the roof of a building. They implode the building with the truck on top. They drag the truck out of the ruble and they show it starting right up. The second one is them lighting another 80's pickup on fire, then dropping it about 75 feet off of the beach into the ocean. The waves are tossing it around. They drag it out and they show it staring right up. Come on now.... Do they think people are really that stupid?

Didn't "Top gear" do a piece where they tied an old Toyota to a pier for a test and the ties broke, the truck was submerged, and after they towed it out and a local mechanic spent some time working on it they got it started? granted, the commercial is not believable, but those trucks are pretty tough...

Top Grea has tried to destroy a Hilux on numerous episodes - Thats probably where Toyota got the commercial ideas from

living here in ireland we get top gear every weekend and its on cable every night. they really did thrash that toyota, it was dropped from a building and left at sea while the tide came in over it. IT REALLY DID START. its on the programme every week. i am going to england tomorrow to the big motor show and it might be there, if it is i will take photos. the 3 guys who do top gear have an hours long show tomorrow, we are going to it and what they dont do with cars is amazing.the whole roadshow they do is coming to ireland in 2 weeks time and its a sell out, ticket prices are about $150 per person.

I agree. The British humor is what MAKES that show! My guess is without it, the show will be like all the other car shows over here....one long running advertisement.

I think it's funny how they picked a pre-electronic year. Toyota's just running on the reputation the 22R & 22RE motors gave them 25 years ago. I had a few ('82, '83 & '84) Celca's with both of those motors. They really were awesome motors, even after a quarter million miles. I don't think that Toyota's are half of what they once were. But hey, what is, right?

I'll X3 that statement!

Think if they did one with muscle cars - I bet that would get some attention!

Maybe but there's already musclecar shows on Speed. They need to mimic the format of the BBC show if it's going to be any good.

All the Toyota commercials really suck. The truck running under the pendulums and stopping at the edge of the cliff, all those stupid commercials. The stupid Ford commercial where they hook on the front tow hook and spin the whole truck, then brag about how strong the hook is. All of it would stop me from buying their products. Just as bad in my opinion are the beer commercials I see for all brands. I believe they are aimed at 14 year old boys!

Enough of the whining. Point out one that really lit your fire, you went out right away and bought what they were selling.

I still have to laugh at the Toyota commercial about a year ago where they brag up the size of their trailer-hitch, and show how much wider it is than the other brands... What the guys in marketing didn't think about is that by being wider, it flexes more, and is either weaker, or needed to be built thicker (adding weight) to be of the same strength as the "little" one they showed.

Needless to say, they didn't sell me on that one. :D

It's going to be hosted by Adam Carolla...

I watch the Aussie version of TG and it's merely ok. It is identical, right down to the Stig. The hosts do not have the chemistry like the UK guys do. Clarkson is kind of a douche at times with regard to American cars, but overall, I think he's pretty funny. Last week he did fall in love with the ZR1. They broke the Bonneville Flying Mile record for a production car with the ZR1.

Here's the wiki on the US version

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Top_Gear_(U.S._TV_series)
History

As early as April 2007, the BBC was looking to export Top Gear to the United States.[4] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Top_Gear_%28U.S._TV_series%29#cite_note-3) NBC (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NBC) announced, in January 2008, that it had ordered a pilot for a United States (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States) version of the popular UK television show Top Gear (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Top_Gear_%28current_format%29), called Gear.[5] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Top_Gear_%28U.S._TV_series%29#cite_note-ustopgear-4) BBC Worldwide (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BBC_Worldwide) has been contracted to produce the pilot for NBC (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NBC).[6] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Top_Gear_%28U.S._TV_series%29#cite_note-GuardianOrder-5) According to NBC reality chief Craig Plestis (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Craig_Plestis&action=edit&redlink=1), many automakers have already shown interest in America's version of Top Gear.[7] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Top_Gear_%28U.S._TV_series%29#cite_note-ReutersOrder-6)
Jay Leno (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jay_Leno), who originally turned down offers to host the show, expressed concern over whether or not a show like Top Gear could be successful in America.[8] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Top_Gear_%28U.S._TV_series%29#cite_note-ABLeno-7)[9] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Top_Gear_%28U.S._TV_series%29#cite_note-JNLeno-8) In a column published by The Sunday Times (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Sunday_Times), Leno expresses concern that an American version could lack the critical reviews the British version is known for.[10] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Top_Gear_%28U.S._TV_series%29#cite_note-Leno-9) The British show is produced for the BBC with public funds while the American show will air on commercial television. Leno believes that the show may have to worry about offending current and potential sponsors by giving their products poor reviews, leading to a compromise in the journalistic integrity and freedom of the original show.
On 16 June, 2008, NBC and BBC officially announced Top Gear.[1] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Top_Gear_%28U.S._TV_series%29#cite_note-ABofficial-0)[2] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Top_Gear_%28U.S._TV_series%29#cite_note-JNofficial-1) On June 19, 2008, Adam Carolla (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adam_Carolla) mentioned on his radio talk show that NBC would be allowing the hosts of Top Gear to praise and criticize cars as they saw fit.[11] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Top_Gear_%28U.S._TV_series%29#cite_note-CarollaCriticize-10)
The studio segments for the pilot were taped on 26 July 2008 to generally favorable reviews citing close following of the UK version's format.[12] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Top_Gear_%28U.S._TV_series%29#cite_note-PilotWrap-11)

Hosts

Along with the official announcement of Top Gear was the announcement of the hosts of the show; Adam Carolla (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adam_Carolla), Tanner Foust (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tanner_Foust), and Eric Stromer (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eric_Stromer).[1] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Top_Gear_%28U.S._TV_series%29#cite_note-ABofficial-0)[2] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Top_Gear_%28U.S._TV_series%29#cite_note-JNofficial-1)[13] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Top_Gear_%28U.S._TV_series%29#cite_note-TGofficial-12)

The Loch Ness one is a pretty impressive (and creative) use of CG IMO. I think it's a great spot.
