I'm the 3rd owner (one owner was my brother) of a 72' Malibu.

The car originally had a 307 with a powerglide in it.

I've since put a 454 and a th350 in it.

I recently got into the rear. It's a one-legger 8.2 inch 10 bolt. pretty much junk.

My question is, what gear did they originally come in? I divided the number of teeth on the ring gear by the number of teeth on the pinion gear and it's a 3.08 gear, which seemed a bit odd to me. I thought they had 2.73 or a 2.5? in them stock.

Input???

As far as I know, nobody ever put a gear in it.

thanks.

3.08 was a very common gear in any chevy product, 10 or 12 bolt. less common was 3.36 in the 10 bolt and even more scarce was 3.70 8.2 used with O/D applications. tom

That sounds EXTREMELY LIKELY that it came with that gear. As already mentioned, the 3.08 10bolts were VERY common back then.
If you beat and bang on it a lot, you need to start searching for a 12bolt posi. If you CANNOT locate a 12bolt with a posi, you can buy a new Eaton posi unit (that's what came in them) and install it. If you are going to be driving it in a sane manner, and the 3.08 is in good shape, then you could buy an Eaton for the 10bolt and install it. Doing nothing except adding a posi to a non-posi rear will definitely increase its life expectancy.
