Well I had asked a couple questions concerning a noise I was hearing, and my temps going up. I fixed the temp problem but still hear that noise. Anyway, my question and problem is, it seems like when I set my timing using my gun...and I go to recheck it days or week(s) later, my timing has changed. What do you guys think? I tighten the distributor bolt pretty tight, and I'm afraid to go any tighter and break it. I don't think it's normal for timing to change by itself like that. For example, last time I set my timing, I left it at 15* initial, and that was roughly 2 weeks or so ago. I rechecked it again last week, and the gun was showing me that it moved to 10*, which was the reason my motor was running hotter then usual graemlins/clonk.gif Could it be I'm doing something wrong? Or could it possibly be my gun giving me a false reading? I do have one problem with the gun, the part that you put onto your plug wire (forgot the name of it) has melted by me putting it on No. 1 plug wire and being near/slightly touching the header. So to "solve" the problem, I now put it on No.1 plug wire on the distributor f(rom what I know of, it doesn't really matter, am I right?), and from being in my trunk, it has also come apart. I have since "krazy glued" it together and it seems to work ok. So...what do you guys think? My gun or my distributor/timing? TIA everyone and I look forward to everyone's input graemlins/beers.gif

From experience, if you are using a ratchet and swivle socket instead of a distributor wrench, you might be turning the distributor as you tighten the bolt. This happens when the top of the swivle socket contacts the bottom distributor....you would be surprised how little contact is required to move it 5 degreese.

I use an open wrench...but yeah, you're right, the slightest movement can advance or retard it a couple degrees.

If you're using one of those afmkt chrome job distributor clamps they often bend and just don't hold well..

I have a bunch of clamps around here somewhere. I'll try to find a nice one and I'll call you so you can pick it up. free of charge of course, lol.

but yeah, hold down clamps do a big difference. The one on my 305 wouldnt hold well, the chrome one i found in my car didnt hold well either. I tried like 3-4 GM pieces from the junkyard before i found a good one.

Check your balancer for slippage.
