hey guys, if you could give me any input on this I'd appreciate it. http://www.chevelles.com/cgi-bin/forum/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=22&t=004643
where is the best place to mount the solenoid? i am thinking on the firewall over the starter or on the inner fender next to the battery? thanx for any input. mike

The solenoid will have to remain on the starter. You can add a remote relay in series with the solenoid control wire to assure adequate current to the solenoid. On older GM products the circuit resistance has increased enough to limit the current to the starter solenoid. Adding a relay that applies power directly from the battery to the solenoid coil will assure that the car starts when it is hot. Use the original solenoid control wire to actuate the relay. The circuit current will be reduced from about 8 amps to 100 milliamps.

The remote works very well. You probably do not need to move the battery up front. On my 67, which has the battery in the rear, I mounted the remote solenode on the firewall. On my 66, which has the battery in the original location, I mounted it on the inner fender. You should check the voltage on the start wire. Mine was 7 volts, which is too low. You need 9 volts mim. If it is low, consider running a new wire. On these old cars the connections and wires crystalize and the resistance goes up.

To do this right, you need to do some wiring at the original starter solenoid. You need to put a jumper from the start terminal ("S") to the battery connection. That way the solenode can engage the bendix drive. So what you end up with is a cable from the battery to the remote then a cable from the remote to the starter solenode and a jumper from the "S" terminal to the battery connection. The old "S" terminal wire now goes to the ("S") terminal on the remote. Sadly, you will need to drop the starter to rewire it. Hope that makes sense. Here is a link to some diagrams. You can try what onovakind67 suggested and switch the start wire. I did that first but it didn't work for long. A couple weeks later I ended up wiring it as above.

Nice! I just bought a "Start Em Up" kit made by MAD. It's the same thing as the diagram Pat posted, but it comes with all the wiring needed and a metal "blade" looking jumper instead of the 10 gauge wire.

With battery in trunk wouldn't the best place to mount the relay be in the trunk also so the cable for the starter isn't always hot?
