: TH350 reverse slipping?
steve_sutherland Nov 11th, 08, 10:19 PM basically what it sounds like, the other day i fired up my car and tried to back out of my friends driveway, the car acted like it was in neutral and started to slightly roll forward, i adjust my gear shift and definitely got it to sit in reverse but it still couldnt hook and it was slipping, after a decnt drive home and doing some running around, i pulled up to ym house and trying to back into my driveway i had the same problem, but now other times its fine.
what can i do?
steve_sutherland Nov 11th, 08, 10:20 PM and also i should add it has new fluid in it, and its full
Bow_Tied Nov 12th, 08, 12:36 AM You recently changed the oil and filter? Anything else done recently?
steve_sutherland Nov 12th, 08, 6:03 PM Hey Ron, havent talked to you in a while how have you been, and no nothing else has been done recently, just oil and filter change
Bow_Tied Nov 12th, 08, 8:57 PM Not too much new with me - family stuff, school, work etc. I did go to Germany for a week, that was cool.
I am sooo not an auto trans guru. If it were mine, the things I would look for were fluid level which you already did, I would then look for any loose linkage parts etc at the trans. I assume when you shift you go by feel rather than what the prndl shows - those get out a sync after a few decades. After that I would assume that there is an internal issue.
Hopefully someone else will chime in with what to check next.
steve_sutherland Nov 12th, 08, 9:43 PM thats awesome, Germany sounds like it would be a fun,
i appreciate any input so its great, i will check the linkage and see what i can find, just i'm afraid that it is more along the lines of some internal problem, i've heard of the clutch plates slipping and stuff, but i have absolutly not idea how to deal with that:confused:
i'm thinking this is one thing where it'll be best to step aside and let a pro handle it rather than me, getting into an auto tranny freaks me out!
Also yes when i shift I go by the notch i feel, and i can hear it get into gear because my rpms drop
Bow_Tied Nov 12th, 08, 10:39 PM To be clear - only issues in reverse, forward is working fine, right?
BigBocks66SS Nov 13th, 08, 1:11 PM Are you saying that you recently changed the tranny fluid & filter? What was in the pan? More than likely the new fluid washed out what was left of the clutches if the tranny has alot of miles on it. It sounds like you are having problems with either the low/rev clutches or the direct clutches. The easiest way to determine which set it is, is to drive it forward up to about 30 mph, let off the gas and manually pull the shifter down to low range, if you have no engine braking , then the low/rev clutches are the problem, if you do have engine braking, then the problem is most likely the direct clutch in which case, the 2-3 shift should be a little sluggish. Also another thing to check, is to make sure that the tranny doesn't try to pull forward in neutral, if it does, then you either have a loose internal linkage nut, which is not allowing the manual valve to move, or the forward clutches are jammed on. HTH, Jim
steve_sutherland Nov 13th, 08, 4:40 PM Yes the problem is only in reverse, and alright thanks a lot, by what you have said there it will be the direct clutch, i do have engine braking and the engine draggind it down if i downshift, and also in neutral the car hasnt had any tendancies to pull forward
