A big Lucas ad in NHRA's weekly mag National Dragster says Lucas Oil Stabilizer and racing oil helps prevent premature cam and lifter wear. It also says some engine builders and cam suppliers require it for warranty purposes. Machinists and engine builders, any comments on this?

Most oil's are a mixture of additives and detergents. Some additives prevent foaming or are antitoxidants to prevent breakdown. Others are friction modifiers or used to prevent rust or corrosion.

Anytime you add an oil additive like Lucas that is sold over the counter (many times they are just additional detirgents)to the base formula of a company's oil you risk having problems with the mixture. Some will cause foaming or oxidiation. Others may gum up or cause other problems like sticky lifters or corrosion.

In the end I personally feel that you rarely get any improved oiling as the result of an oil addative suppliment. Most are simply snake oil. If you are concerned about oiling... I think you are best to switch over to a full synthetic oil or a synthetic blend like Mobil 1 and make sure you use a high quality filter like a Wix.

Do a search, pleny of comparisons on here,i think theres even a link to someone who ran side by side tests of additives. The result was a good quality oil out performed the lucas additive.

The additives made the oil foam up.

Good advice above. Proper breakin of the cam is very important. Motor oil usually has all the additives it needs. What do you expect an advertiser to say about its product.
