alright its a 80's ls6 crate engine bored .030 over 10:5:1 pistons, comp 292H cam .550 lift advertised duration 244 at .050 timing,Edelbrock Victor R single plane intake with adapter to run a regular not a domniator carb,Comp cams magnum pushrods and roller tip rockers,Hooker Super Comp Headers, msd 6al and a 750 Edelbrock...the car seems to have so much more power that it seems to not be using and it wont idle under 900rpm or it'll shut off i have the timing set at 8 degrees advanced...

Bump your timing to 16-18* base/36-38* total by 2500-3000 RPM that will wake it right up graemlins/thumbsup.gif
Lose that intake, and get a Performer RPM too.
I don't see that cam idling less than 900-1000 either

I'd try a different intake. Your adapter is probable hurting you. necking to 4500 from 4150 is a bad thing. graemlins/sad.gif The trick is to use Dominator on a 4150 base with an adapter.. that works very well for race. You would be better off with high quality single plane 4150 top intake and one of the new spacers with the machined underside to promote graemlins/thumbsup.gif flow...

Yes part of your problem is timing related.

You didn't mention what distributor you have.

So what is it?

If MSD replace the advance stop bushing with the largest one in the kit and reset your timing for 34-36 total.

This hould help quite a bit as 8 degrees is not close to what that cam needs.

I used that cam in a 454. about 10:1 compression, torker II intake, holley 780 carb. It would idle around 700rpm, but would be choppy. I believe a victor is more aggressive (for lack of a better term) intake than the torker II so I wouldn't be surprised if it was a little too rough uner 900 rpms or so. A dual plane intake would be the way to go with it.
and fix the timing problem as was already said.

its a stock GM HEI distributor....i orignally had it set at 12 degress advanced and the car loved it until i'd cruise at a steady RPM the engine would skip...i dropped the timing down to 8 degrees and it wouldn't skip but seemed to lose that snap it had i'm only 18 this was my very first time tackling anythign more than a starter change or a water pump...built it from the block up myself with help of a freind who runs a machine shop i was thinking on switching to an Air GAP RPM performer and putting an 850 on it?..forgot one mroe thing i have a torque tech exhaust on it with 2 flowmaster 40 series 2 chambers with no tail pipes...i took my uncle for a ride in the other day and we couldn't have a conversation it was so loud...would putting a 3 chamber on there and adding tailpipes quiet it down a bit?

i might sound dumb..but how do i check total timing?

With a timing tape stuck to the damper and a timing light. The tape is numbered to 360. So you rev the engine up to 3500 or so and read the number next to zero on the timing tab. Or you buy a dial back timing light. They have a number dial to indicate timing. Make sure your fan is in good shape before doing this. Things occasionally come apart up there. You don't want body parts in the vicinity.

With an Edelbrock carb, big intake, and big cam, it is probably lean too. Buy a jet kit, get an RPM intake.

You will want to leave your vac advance disconnected and then bump the timing up to 36-38 total. It will probably ping until you tune the vac can and advance so you may have to leave it disconnected. You'll need to buy a new can more than likely to use it again. You want to run vac advance on a street car.

FYI..advancing your timing should NOT make your motor skip..and yes, tailpipes will make your car ALOT quieter..don't bother with the airgap..a "standard" RPM intake will do just fine..

I run a simular cam by lunati 244@50 572 lift. I had to change my vacuum advance this cam pulls very little vacuum at idle. I also changed to a stelth dual plane which helped. It still will only Idle at 900 lowest but the advance running full manafold at idle helps pull the timming in to 16 and smoothed out great.I also run a 750hp carb and had to setup secondary plates for a better Idle if you are running a 4 corner Idle system.
If I can help let me know

Sounds like you are getting to much timing from vaccum advance under normal driving conditions. You need to limit vaccum advance timing to 10* under light throttle this would put you around 46* while driving.Yet your total would still be 36* because there's no vaccum under full throttle. graemlins/waving.gif

i do have horrible brake pressure in the car even with a vaccum can mounted on the inner fender
