I'm looking at them for my street 454 / th400 and wanted to get some input. Seems like a good deal

that cant be any worse then the other cheap convertors i have been buying off ebay from TSI ( big end convertors). there convertors are real cheap. i payed 150 bucks for a 2800 stall shipped to my door thru them and it was rated at 2400 to 2800 stall. behind my bbc 414 it has been doing just fine with about 50 to 60 1/4 mile runs and about 3 or 4,000 miles on it. this is the second one i have bought the other one was a 2200 stall and i sold it to someone else.

the big end convertor seems to be pretty efficient because it only has 6.7% worth of slippage at peak rpm of 6500 rpms.

Check out www.transmission-specialties.com (http://www.transmission-specialties.com) They have the 12" street/strip converters, fully furnace brazed.
12HS 2400 - 2800 stall 146.00
12LS 2000 - 2400 stall 133.00

The 10" I have now started out as a TCI 3500 unit but was reworked to a 3000 stall unit. I will probably be dropping down to the 12LS unit when I change out the 408 motor for the 454.

I was looking through their catalog though and it seems these are more appropriate for mild small blocks. The 10" TC's (10LS and 10HS) they have are listed for big blocks. But, they're in the $450 range.

So, is a 10" more appropriate for a big block in the 500-550 HP range?

The 12"HS is set up for a bigblock - at least I think it is. Probably best to call whoever you are confortable with and ask them for a specific recommendation. Just be sure to know what you intend to do with the car before you call. Just my own experience, but everytime I call for a recommendation for sometinglike a converter or a cam, I wind up installing larger than I first thought I wanted/needed. A 10" converter hits harder under full throttle but is really lazy at low RPM. On my current 408 setup, I have to run the engine to 6200+ in order to get any facsimile of a firm shift to second, otherwise it feels like the motor is always running against the stall. Everyone is different, but for me a mid 2K stall is a good street compromise with mid ot high 3 series gears. I will be going to a 12"HS when I swap out the 408 motor.

My machine shop recommended a 2500. I don't know if they have any recommendations as far as manufacturers though.

Just remember, on converters, more than any other part, you typically get what you pay for. Just ask any of us that have had a less expensive converter and then swapped to a more expensive, better quality converter what a difference it made. The better quality, high stall converters perform "almost" stock when cruising around town but when launched hard you'll know it's not a stock piece. Coan converters are usually on sale this time of year and they are well respected. Check out their website.

The problem with getting into a higher stall converter that is built on the 12" case is that they have to be built loose to get the stall up and therefore will be very inefficient converters. I have gone through this as well. I now have a "tight" 10" BTE 3000 stall sitting ready to go in this weekend. I'll let you know how it works out. It cost me $360 delivered from Steve Oldani.
