: 427 Cam Idea
70L34 Mar 18th, 04, 6:21 PM Hey everyone,
Need your HONEST opinion on this cam in a 10:1, Merlin oval port 427 BBC. It's a Howard Cams solid flat-tappet, 286/292 adv. duration, 250/256 @ 0.050", .595/.609" lift, 110LSA. This is about the mildest Howard solid cam I could find for a BBC. Too much for a street/strip car? Thanks for any and all advice.
Scott_68_SS Mar 19th, 04, 2:21 AM What is the adv dur. rated at?
.020?
Thor_70_SS runs a UD288/296F10 rated at .020 with a 10.5ish 427.
Drives around town fine.
Needs 3k stall though.
427L88 Mar 19th, 04, 7:57 AM Tony, I IMPLORE you to consider Brookshire's Lunati A3 solid. It'll take about 7 off your seat durations, but might not take much off the .200s. Ultimately streetable, yet seems to make tremendous power to 6500+, even installed +7.
I feel uncomforatable always pushing "my" cam, but, sheesh, it's a dandy. Last fall I ran against my best buddy, who had my L88 for a while and then 'upgraded' to a 509 in his 68 Camaro.Well, with my soft 60' he still beat me ( 11.65 v 12.25) but Old Red out-mph'd him every run. Figure the Chevelle is maybe 300 lbs heavier too. He uses a Crane SR in that 509. Dart Pro 1, etc.
I have 30 yr old heads with a terrible short-side radius on the ex side and still make more power , with a 70 ci disadvantage.
Pretty good testimony on the grind. PLEASE take this amatuer street rat's word on this. Call Harold. Broadcast to the world that the A3 IS the street/strip bbc cam.
70L34 Mar 19th, 04, 11:01 AM Gene,
I TOTALLY hear you on the Lunati cam and I know that it comes highly recommended by everyone. For reasons out of my control, I may have to use a Howard's cam (if you know what I am getting at). Drop me an email if you want.
Scott,
That's good to hear. I don't know where the advertised duration is measured--isn't it usually at 0.002, not 0.020? I am hardly an expert, just curious.
Thanks for the help guys!
427L88 Mar 19th, 04, 1:20 PM Lima Charlie on that. Then I would stay with what 'looks' like a cam that's too big, so you get it right' on the .200 durations. Consider phasing it quite advanced and running the lash a bit loose when it's good and worn in. Good luck!
Maybe someday you can write some copy on the 'other' company in Memphis! Keep up the good work Tony.
SAE standard adv duration is at .006" of lift I just read.
Scott_68_SS Mar 20th, 04, 7:31 AM The low rated numbers are for hydraulics. I don't know the SAE # for solids. Most solids are rated at .015 or .020. Pat Kelly found a reference to lash /rocker ratio + .004 to get seat timing comparable to SAE.
By your street strip comment I thought that's the way you were leaning.
I thought your CR was low, but didn't comment.
For 10.0 and street, I agree with Gene. 276/284.
I have one in my 383. Lots of low end and mid. I want my 468 to be different so I went 288/296.
What weight car? What rear gears? What trans? It's a bit big on duration for street unless the gears are adequate. Stick that motor in a car with a sloppy automatic and a 3.08 rear,...no. Stick it in the same car with a stick and 4.10's,....maybe.
Johnny O Mar 20th, 04, 9:19 AM Tony, see my post "Would this help my bottom end" That cam is the exact one I have in my car now..maybe some of the info will be helpful, even though our combo is not equal. John
