John,

I'll recommend 2 cams, a solid and a hydraulic.
The hydraulic first:
Lunati 301A1LUN--254/262 at .0045, 199/207
at .050, .401/.427 valve
lift, and 112 LSA.
This cam has won the SCCA Stock championship twice, and never been detected by a emmisions sniffer while winning. Putting it into a stock 305 TPI IROC-Z gives a 35-HP gain, and power increases from idle to about 5000. Blueprinted 305 IROC-Zs get about a 55-HP gain. In 305 pickups the mileage is increased and overall power is very noticably increase. It would work in your engine.
Now the Solid:
A custom cam grind---264 at .020, 232
at .050, .470" valve
lift, .016" valve lash,
and either 110 or 112
LSA.
The 110 LSA would perform the best on the track, and would probably like a 2400 SS converter, the 3.73 is just fine. The 112 LSA would give more vacuum, work with the 2000 SS, and be better as far as gas mileage, driving to work, etc. Corvettes with 327s and the 264F10 are terrors, smoking the tires whenever wanted.....
the .200" on the 254/262H is 106/117, and on the 264F is 140. The 272F10, Lunati 401A2LUN, 238 at .050, .485 valve lift, would require at least a 2800 SS in your 305.
I have about 14 solid lifter profiles under .525" gross valve lift, usuable in Vortec heads.
The biggest duration cam I have with .525 lift pulled a 45 ftlb variation torque curve from 3500 to 6000 RPM, 355 cid, 10.3:1 CR.
