My friend has a 70 C10 stepside truck. The truck is very light probably only 3200 ibls. it has a 396 with about 9.5-1 compression, air gap intake, 2" headers, hydraulic flat tappet, with pretty close specs to a CCEX274, 2800 stall turbo 400, 3:42 gears, cast iron 781 oval port heads. He has a HP 950 that is brand new that he got for cheap, we are wondering if that carb would be overkill, I know it only flows 830 CFM and that they are known for excellent throttle response. I am thinking he might be able to get away with it since the truck is very light. What do you guys think?

It may not be too bad but I think the 750HP "MIGHT " have bean a better choice.
One thing is for sure...Headers are  BIG!
If he already owns it give it a try. If possible then try a 750. I bet it won't be hard to find someone to trade for the 950. That truck should be a fun ride graemlins/thumbsup.gif

The motor I have in my wagon came out of my 76 stepside, about the same setup as that truck, cept my heads were closed chamber, and it had the 177 blower on it. I had a 950 on it, good responce, little too good for the street, and it would sometimes foul a plug at startup, which would clear when things warmed up a bit. Anyway I traded for a 800, the truck ran better, now that the motor is in the wagon I haved creaped back upto a 850, stil runs good in shebeast.

I run one on my 70 and it is a mild 400sbc. It has produced better times than an 850dp and a vac sec 750. For street driving I like the 750 vac sec carb best of the three. But the 950hp is still very responsive, it has loaded the plugs on a couple of occasions though.
