Well guy's while finishing the install on my electic fan of course the last step is to put the battery cables back on ....Picture this......I have a large wing nut that holds all the cables on etc.....the only way to get them real snug is to put a wrench on it.....

I was going real slow to make sure that it didn't hit the rod holding the battery down....Bang my wedding ring hit the rod and the wrench was also touching the inside of my ring ...In an instant my ring was red and I couldn't get it off ...Therefore burning my finger to near the bone......I burned my other fingers trying to pull it off.....

I woke my wife up and said I have a problem...She who has a rock solid belly turned pure white and sat down and said she was gonna get sick :( So....

I went to our local Hospital at 11pm and at 3am they told me I had to go to Weschester burn unit ...They were afraid I would loose my finger because there was no blood going to the good half....But before the trip they had slice my finger through the whole burn to open it so that things would get flowing.....That felt good.

I got to weschester around 6am and had to wait for hours for the burn unit (I slept for a bit )....They do there thing and tell me I have pretty much burned it to the bone and they have to rebuild it or I will loose it....However they cant do anything for a few day's because they need to put new tissue to good tissue and there isn't any and there hoping after a few days there will be......

It looks just like a fake finger that we have all seen ....just kinda stops past my knuckle....

I go Monday morning to a plastic surgeon and we will figure out the plan...Skin Graph etc.....

I am a freak when it comes to safety ...I even pit a floor jack under the car when I swap tires....It was just was of those weird things I guess......A lesson learned.....My wife and I will go and pick out a new band for me and she said from now on you will take off your wedding band when working on the car graemlins/beers.gif

I told the Doc I was going racing Sunday ...he said you better go now because when they dig in I will be in worse shape .....also not much pain now because everything is dead......My wife and I are going racing tomorrow I will let you guy's know how I do.....Thanks...Scott.

Made a friday night res at the "Bates", see you guys Saturday. Don't have any ET goal, just to make a clean run. Weren't ANY impressive stick cars last year ( which is disappointing at a nostalgic event), and a few where you wondered if the owners ever drove them or ANY manual transmission car.

Be great to see you guys and that collection of 10 and NEAR 10 second cars!

Jim, no predictions. Have never got a decent 60' yet, and all runs were 1/8 which aren't the best for a large port , mildly geared motor through a clutch.

I predict I'll try and shift it correctly and quickly!

50% chance of rain. :(

Hi Brian.

Thanks..Maybe not any new bests this time. hopefully I can get the H-pipe on this week and see if that makes any difference, if not at least it will be a little quieter and a little more stealth.

Over the winter I will be port matching the Victor Jr. and an RPM intake to my heads and removing the choke horn from my carb. Will be doing some testing with that next spring.

The car is doing what I designed it to do, low RPM, easy on parts, nice street manners and highway cruising, and running 10's. It has a lot more in it with some part swaps like gears and converter but that is not in the plans...as I want to keep it reliable and consistent and work on my next project that is in progress.

That X is a scavenging sum-B. Bigley put one on and it didn't do a thing, due, I hazard a guess, to the already good scaveging by the scavenging collectors.

No bigtime partying tonight for me, I have a brutal headcold. Sucks. Hope I can extricate my cranium from my rectal ports enough to cut a decent light tomorrow. smile.gif

Track condition could go either way. They scraped and sprayed it pretty good last Sunday and it didn't rain all week so it might be in decent shape... On the other hand, its "only" a Saturday event not a regular points day so they might not prep much. I'm with you Tom, if the track sucks, my little 9" slicks are going to take a beating.

Bill, I have to admit. As I was booking the motel this week, I hoped none of these "leaf lookers" was driving the rates up at the "Bates".
Ya , right.

We found the local hot spot. Shaker Silly ( and the best bartender!!! ) But were civil enough to sack out early and get to the track early.

The LVD Gang! (http://www.chevelles.com/showroom/427TRI/lvdgang.jpg)

Had to have a Guiness to cure my cold you know. It Worked!

Chris, Mark and I pitted together (http://www.chevelles.com/showroom/427TRI/LVDpits.jpg)

Got ABSO FRIGGIN LUTELY SPANKED by some big guy in a Bronze Bullet! smile.gif

By the time I got into the powerband, Tom was like, 6 car lengths ahead of me. graemlins/clonk.gif I ain't kidding.

HOT DANG, DID I POWERESHIFT EVERY GEAR TRYING TO GAIN ON HIM!!!!!

Gearing seems perfect, caught 4th a bit before the stripe. Had a chance to get up in the revs for some NICE top end. Fianlly with a stage loc on, I went for an easy 2500 rpm launch, with a bit of easing into it.

Way too soft! 2.30sec 60' only got that Old Red down the track in 12.7sec @117mph.

I need to launch this car MUCH MUCH harder. It seems to have an adequately tuned suspension, for now, at least to get to sub 2.0 60' fts.

Can you spell "SCATTERSHIELD"?

And the fastest Chevelle among our gang, and the car that just " does it" for me!

Jim's blown 69 ! (http://www.chevelles.com/showroom/427TRI/Jim692lvd.jpg)

Jim ran a 11.07 at 123 with an engine going a bit lean and losing some cylinder pressure through the guides. If "my favorite" was running well, he would have give our King-of-the-Valley, Tom Baird, a darn good run for the money.

Bronze Bullet was on 10.85s all day. I couldn;t even get THIS CLOSE (http://www.chevelles.com/showroom/427TRI/mc71454rear.jpg) to Tom's rear bumper!

And my favorite cruising car...The 12 second( almost) Clark Kent car! (http://www.chevelles.com/showroom/427TRI/CC70LVD.jpg)

Had a great time!

I had a great time as well..I couldn't hook up (best 60 ft. was 1.95 using Gene's 275/50 drag radials) My best run was a 13.45/101 MPH..pretty far from my 1.83 60 ft./12.99 ET but oh well..it was a beautiful day,saw some great cars in action, and hung out with some good friends graemlins/thumbsup.gif

427L88
Oct 12th, 03, 8:10 AM
Jim, the car is hooking well enough to allow a very aggressive powershift into 2nd, but I really have to get aggressive on the launch.

Tom should have "stole" it for a run and beat the heck out of it. With a sub 2.0 sec 60', the car has the potential to run very low 12's. Maybe even better! Nevertheless, I'm pleased with a first 1/4 time of 12.7 @117. That lil 439 is making some decent power, with marginal heads and street clearances internally.

It's a start, eh! IF the weather holds ( and it doesnt look good), I'll try another t-n-t this week and beat the heck out of 'em at the tree. Curious to see what the suspension limits are. I'll start at 4000 rpm launch.

The tech guy gave me a hard time, no loop, crappy helmet, and wrote me in as a 14.20 car. Whoops. Would have freaked them out if I brought it up to 5 on the launch and twisted that old bastid AIRBORNE!

Great time was had by all!

Oh, sorry Jim, 275/50 DR. I did not spin off the line. I ran the motor down too slow. Something tells me that if the way to launch Old Red is 4000+ rpm, then the larger 275/60s would be better for the severe hit. But for now, I need to find the limits of these short sidewall tires.

Maybe with your oval heads you can ease into it with a modest 2500 rpm launch. Seems like this one is bit different. Has to be done Ballz-out for optimal result. Stay tuned! I'd like to work it down to near 12.0. Might take a bit, and a broken part here and there. smile.gif

'mornin fellas! Glad to see you guys made it home safely. In all, it was a pretty good day. Tom was still going rounds when I left. Hopefully he'll post soon with some results.

Well Gene, you definitely sugar-coated my day because that was pretty much the worst day for my car I've had yet. First, I couldn't get in the same class that the rest of you were in (DOT) because I was running slicks. So no photo opp/grudge race with Tom. graemlins/clonk.gif Then starts my mystery oil leak/smoke which I think now is starting to come from a couple of shot valve seals or guides. Lastly, I had the car set up waaaay too lean and on the first pass I melted the straps off of 4 plugs before I even got to the 1/8 mile. I coasted through to an 11.40 at 99 MPH - smoking heavy most of the way down. My used slick experiment also bit me as I spun hard coming off the line. Oh well.

I thought some of the oil might be coming from a valve cover so I decided to patch it up and try for another pass. I took two pounds of air out of the slicks, poured in the rest of my gas for weight, put in 8 new plugs, took a little timing out, and richened the jetting. I spun even worse this time (a 1.67 60', graemlins/sad.gif ) and fogged in the starting line again with oil smoke. Once it hooked it felt pretty good so I stayed in it and mustered an 11.03 at 123 MPH. I knew that was it for me and sure enough I got the "park it, kid" sign from the top end official. No eliminations for me. On the plus side, it doesn't seem like I hurt it on that first pass so I'm happy about that. In all, a good day... great to see you guys again... but I definitely have some work to do.

Great time for me too! Unfortunately an "oil down" really ruined the day for competition... This guy blow's his rear at the starting line must have cracked the case, and with the officials trying to stop him he runs it down the middle of the whole D@M track to a 20+ second run and coats it with gear oil the whole way right in the middle. This was in a $35k + '68 Z28/RS Mint Camaro no less!!! graemlins/clonk.gif graemlins/clonk.gif graemlins/clonk.gif graemlins/angry.gif graemlins/angry.gif .
That delayed us at least an hour and maybe it was two

Since the dew got so bad, they had to call the races and give the trophies to the car with the best package. Ran a 10.82 previous but by this time I was dialing a 10.99 to account for tire spin with the dew on the track when it would have run in the 10.70's....gotta love the Northeast US.

I have a great video of Jim, Chris, and Gene and me going head to head. Have to do some family stuff today..but will try and get the videos up by tonight.

great seeing and racing with friends, got some killer deals at the swap meet, and I got asked if I ran nitrous. graemlins/clonk.gif

This was in a $35k + '68 Z28/RS Mint Camaro no less!!! I saw this race, you guys would not have believed it! There were actually two of these nicely restored Camaros and it was obvious neither driver had raced before. Both did pro stock style burnouts past the starting line (with their street tires mind you  ) and had to back up to get behind the line. Just like a flashback to Toad from American Graffiti, when the light turned green one car lurched forward and the other lurched back! That's right ladies and gentlemen, this guy dumped the clutch while still in reverse! graemlins/clonk.gif

Luckily, he quickly figued out that he was headed in the wrong direction and got right out of it. His friend wasn't so observent. At the hit of the throttle it was obvious he had destoyed the rearend as the car moved about a foot and stopped. Right about the time the starter saw the growing puddle of gear lube under the car and was walking over to the driver to signal him to shut it off, this numbnut revs it up and tries to launch again. He did this three more times before he apparently caught a tooth on the ring gear and started to take off. By this time the starter was in full stride, waving his arms, trying to get the driver's attention. Nope. This guy popped and banged it the whole 1/4 mile. Unreal.

Sorry to hear you got cut short Tom. You were making effortlessly perfect runs all day. Your car is so cool to watch... no fuss, no wasted motion, it just squirts off the line and glides down the track. graemlins/thumbsup.gif

Are you really going to post a video of my "smoke show"? Who wants to see THAT? :D

Jim,

Thanks, I was VERY dissapointed because it was running the numbers all day. The new cold air induction system has worked pefect so far for consistency, no conclusive gain in ET or mph unfortunately, but it runs within a few hundreths with the change in the weather and is very predictable.

I won't post the video if you don't want me too, maybe just the burnout? Your call of course..but I will E-mail it to you in it's entirety.

mc 71454, how does the short time effect trap speeds? I'd guess it's not a high correlation, but still linearly correlated. Or is it?

p.s. Chris had a thought of checking WOT's the night before. Thank God. His was perfect. Mine, on the other hand, was showing , maybe, 1/3 of the secondaries. Maybe 650 cfm in all. There's a rod that needs more threading to shorten, but he and I got it to about 2/3 open, maybe 780-810 cfm?? ( lil' rat needs 830 cfm, by my reckoning anyway). Might have some of the 120 mph right there. ;) At any rate, we had to go out and check WOT operation after the adjustment. :D One of my favorite things to do.

ALSO, that lead us to another one of my favorite things to do. Stop in at a local watering hole, that's mildly rocking, and get served a thrist quenching Guiness by a gal that was most assuredly a devilish angel. Yum yum, love that...!

Gene, FWIW,.....caveat.....In the rare instance when I pull a 2.0x 60' time compared to the 1.7x 60' time, my MPH is usually with .5 range of best case to worst case. It's the ET that suffers with my car when I happen to spin. So you used BFG CompTA drag radials? What was the tire pressure and did you use a line-loc to heat them well?

427L88
Oct 12th, 03, 12:39 PM
Jim, the line loc acts ONLY as a stage-loc. With the drums and DOT5 ( and maybe another reason?), it won't hold a burn out. Chris and I checked that too. It just feels like you're towing something, but you're moving alright. After being chased out of the local elementary school parking lot while using the line lock, I turned the car around on an inclined driveway, and it holds the car from rolling onan incline.

So it's jsut a stage-loc. Plus the few times I got it to burn out, the car got all out of line twisting to one side. At rest, it'll fry 'em "on a string", perfectly straight. It will hold the car a bit if you drop hard against it ( 4K+ ), but its ugly.

Went throught the water ( didnt spin in it) and drops the clutch aggresively ( 5k) to smoke 'em a bit. It moves out right away, so duration is only 3 secs? Started going through the water only because dry, it would only burn out for less than 3 secs.

My first launch procedure lesson from local practice. Now it's all in drop rpm. I can't feather this dang trips. It's gotta come on all at once.

Anyone have any thoughts on a quick disconnect tach, even if its like some industrial one jsut showing rpm X100 on a LED readout, but is small and easly affixed, please do share!

I'm incented now. Man , the humility of that ' bronze blur! flying by you as your just getting  the motor back up to rpm, sheesh!

Chris,

watching your video, I said to myself "not enough air in dem tires" based on how the tire is rolling. You'll see when I get them configured to digital later today.

Jim is correct about .5 mph difference for me too when 60 ft goes away.

Oct 14th, 03, 10:01 AM
Great. Yeah, it felt wierd on that first launch (aside from everything else that went wrong). It almost felt like the tires were balling up and running over themselves, very bouncy but not really wheel hop/not really spinning. It looks like I'm getting decent separation (inti-squat) in the rear. It still went 1.60 in 60'on that run. I'm wondering if this can also be attributed to those used slicks since I've made no other changes to the suspension other than the air bags. I had 20 lbs in the right and none int the left. I could put a little more in each to stiffen it up. Thanks again.

i don't want to start any hot debates here, but Gene's mph is screaming. My engine made 550hp on the dyno, but only mustered a 113.8 in the 1/4 on a 1.85 60' (4020lb). Gene whats your car weigh? and how much grunt do you think that 427 is making!? Do those mph-weight calcs work?
Also, and the debate-possible part is, does a quicker 60' bog down the engine so that the mph drops off at the end, and a spinny or building up longer 60' increase it?
I just think that 117 is really stellar performance for such a relatively mild combo. good job !

Oct 14th, 03, 2:24 PM
Matt, keep in mind that I had no stated goals when I put this buggy together, er, well one, to build it in 1971 specs ( long story). I did try and use every mechanical advantage I could to put together a nice combo and compensate for the large heads/intake. There was no disernible spin off the line, I simply left way too easy and brought the piston speed down too much. Hard shifted every gear and it jumped every time.No spinning.

I'm not hung up on the HP cal'cs. This car can't be light, and I weight 254. But you figure the old L88 made 560 bhp by some accounts. Now this one isnt 12:1, and doesnt have a 334 seat duration cam, but we tried to use modern "smaller but better" parts where applicable. Except the exhaust where a big 3.5" X 3" xpipe tries to mimic open headers.

But it's HP is not a relevant number to me. I tell folks it does what the sticker on the air cleaner says, 435HP. I don't mention that its REAR WHEEL! I've never had a trap spped to do the calc'cs. If we assume a very conservative weight , say 3850 lbs, what does that translate to?

It does open some questions that I'll never resolve. What would ovals do, is the exhaust too big?? Who knows. The 049s are NOT going on this motor unless the big 325cc 074s break again. In fact, this motor isnt being touched. It runs too damn good.

To drive 5 hours @ 75 mph each way, and lay down a 117 mph makes me very happy! Think I did a decent job as an amatuer builder. Point is, I love this Old Red car, and that's NOT open to debate!!!

Using the MPH and weight method (124.29/3,680lbs) it shows 548RWHP

I have actually chassis dynoed this car before and the best it made was 463RWHP. Since that time I've converted to an electric fan/water pump, so maybe freed up a few ponies. I've also resolved a very small fuel delivery problem. I think my car makes right at 500RWHP now, and even that may be optimistic.

The dyno number are a good tuning instrument, assuming your making changes between pulls on the same day. However they're not good for much else IMHO.]

Gene,

Congratulations on your 1/4 pass. I for one am glad you finally took it to the strip to see what it would do. Get you 60' times down to the sub 1.8x range and I believe you have a 11.99 pass in it.

Oct 14th, 03, 8:43 PM
That's nice Gene for a car you drive. In my experience if you stuck an auto in there you'd probably lose a solid 3 mph if not possibly 4 (but you'd run easy 11's then smile.gif ). I'd guess you are making around 400-410 at the wheels if you are 3600-3650 lbs.

You're really pulling hard in the last 1/8th.

When I run 120 MPH on the spray with a T400 and loose converter I'm putting down about 420 at the wheels at 3550 lbs.

427L88
Oct 14th, 03, 9:05 PM
Aw Kenny, it was fun. Just that I know to lay down the kind of time you're talking, which would be a goal, I'll really have to beat up the clutch/flywheel/crank etc, etc with some hard launches, which the suspension might or might not handle. You know what I mean!

And this Old Red car will NEVER have an auto in it. Just its not a drag car, it's a "nostalgic" fun car, multi-purpose.

I'll work down to sub-2s the hard way, and hope it all stays together, for those long, enjoyable cruises home.

It is fun. And I have to tell you, it's fun really 'airing' out the car, i.e., powershifting 4th and keeping the hammer down for a bit, in a controlled situation. Really enjoyable!

Doug, Tom said the mph would indicate 11.7, but that isn't going to happen with this setup, and that's fine by me.

Shift rpm?? Uh, just before it hits the rev limiter. Seriously, still running with a useless blinker tach, that is inaccurate AND unable to be seen through the arm I'm steering with, which is where its located. I told Chris ( mr 4 speed)I'd try and remember to check rpms through the traps, but no way. Can't see it. Ain't jerking my arm around , or taking my eyes off the track at 120mph to glance. Been shifting by ear, again , just prior to the rev limiter. I think in one gear it hit the 7K chip during the shift. SO 6700-6800-ish?

Hey, its a retro resto, not a race car!

Do have to figure out a neat 'quick disconnect' tach. thinking digital industrial type. Small, plastic box, not traditional.

Gene,

Just so we are clear, I like your car alot an I didn't mean a negative post. I've always wanted a resto 67 or 69 to dump all my parts into and make the LS5 454 legit again.. I've always wanted a 4spd bruiser.. but I'm very young, so, maybe I have time..
Just congrats on the 117 (!)

Oct 15th, 03, 7:54 AM
Matt, I did not perceive your post as negative at all. No sweat. Plus, I'm thick skinned and most importantly, Old Red has performed above all my expectations, so negative critism is quite irrelevant to me. The car is a blast! Now, if you said you didn't like the 71/72 SS rims, well, that I'd accept as valid, neither do I! Rallies and redlines are in the future at some point.

But I think I proved my point that IF GM had produced the L67 option in 1967 ( A 435HP427 in a Chevelle), it would have been on par with the Hemis, and King of the Streets!

Thanks to all, including Matt, for your kind words, the old red bastid appreciates them! But really, the car that gets my vote, is Jim's 69. Man, something about a blown 69 is just too cool. ( Which is why we ALWAYS have one on our CanAm Show t-shirts!)

And mr.4 speed's "Clark Kent" 70, is truly a dream. Drives just as smooth as a Cadillac, but HONKS down the 1320.

And then there's Tom. Sure not a Chevelle, but when you define "Street/Strip", mc71454 is the king of street/strip around here IMHO. His car idles relatively smooth, he drives it a ways to the track, bolts on slicks, and runs 10.8s with consistentcy measured in hundreths. I mean, Holy Cow Batman, thats a true street/strip ride! Unerring consistency, and drives on the highway for as long as your Mobil card alows!

Hope we can get a few more TC guys there next time! It's a blast boys!

EDIT: added 10/18/03 0024 hrs.

Well the WOT thing and some good night air netted..

R/T .661, 2.145 60', 5.467 330', 8.104 1/8, 93.75 mph, 10.363 1000', 12.264 1/4 @ 118.74.

Right off the highway, just stoped long enough to swap tires, then 'hotlapping myself....

R/T .771, 2.075 60' ( raised rpms a bit but lost concentration), 5.404, 8.082 1/8, 93.23, 10.358 1000' 12.272 1/4 @ 117.81.

Pretty happy. Hotlapped again, and really lost more concentration and had a bad 60' and eased off the run, pulled back into the staging lanes, and after the fast cars ran, went back , nice launch, swiiiiiiiiiinged 2nd gear, again, was thinking too much. Ask mr.4 speed, my 1/2 shift is flawless. In this case my arm went way faster than my clutch leg!

Good stuff though. I'm hooked. Too close to my goal of driving XXX miles, running an 11.99, getting booted for no cage, and driving xxx miles home. My version of "Two Lane Blacktop", and I hit my 2lane numbers tonight, 12.20!

Shhhhhh 11.99 deserves a new one. I was hding it back here as an edit and maybe ask Tom to look at the incrementals and make an analysis. Never got to the big 4500+ rpm clutch drop, as the 60' attest, and I swear I felt the rear ujoint vibrate on the way home when I put power through it. I know what that means.

Anyway, I'm taking your advice my friend, ain't touching a thing. Out of wrench. Next season will start with a good goal. It needs a good going over, lash, ujoint check etc.

THAT'S SO WICKED!

Tom, actually if you have a chance, ol 509Camaro is pretty disappointed with his time. He's running 3.73s 28" BFG DRs and a modest 2800 stall behind a 310ccDart headed 509, Crane SR236. Where should cars running 116-117 mph ET? Is his stall too light? He cant flip the 3X2 open too quickly or he'll smoke them. He has almost too much front end lift on takeoff even though its stock type springs and Koni's.

I'm running 25.5X9" BFG DRs, with 15-16 psi for now. I have NO IDEA where she's taching because I can't see he durn thang ( 67 blinker), but it must be mid-low 6000s judging by ear. I'm totally driving/shifting by ear.

And Tom, HAVE NO DOUBT, taking kids to soccer pratice on occasion TRULY defines street/strip,and brother, YOU'RE THE KING!

Gene and Jerry, thanks for the compliments. I know I'm in the minority with all of you big block guys running around here so the graemlins/thumbsup.gif is always appreciated. Like Tom, the goal for my car was to be able to drive it anywhere on 93 octane and knock down some consistent, respectable times. Different recipe, similar results. The trailer was an absolute luxury for me this time out. I usually drive it the hour+ trip to the track.

I'd say there are no slackers in our little TC bunch over this way! graemlins/beers.gif

We're working on that Mike. Especially with the new drag night. But I have a embyonic consultancy growing, in addition to my regular business, and then the CanAm show to organize. Plate seems a bit full, but CB has always been 'radical decompression' for me. So I'll try.

Anyway, seems like the car will run decent times without beating the tar out of it at launch, i.e., 2.0-2.15 60'. So I don't mind racing 760 miles from home.

Using a calculator, estimate I'm crossing the stripe at 6600 rpm. PERFECT!

Please keep in kind that although not a racer, I did "plug and chug" a bunch of numbers to get this combination together, as well as qualitiative advice on parts combinations.

No big shakes though, lots of 12/11 second cars that are driven all over hell and creation.

Although ACES1 CLEARLY thinks I'm nuts.

I think you're selling yourself short Gene...there's lots of guys that CLAIM to have street cars that go 12's, or 11's, or even faster, but being able to make it hundreds of miles, race, and go back home with no trailer...heck, that's not even easy with a 13 sec car. What you are doing with your car is truly amazing. And doing it all with the ultra-cool tripower, when most racers will tell you to ditch it and go with a monster single 4bbl...Congrats!
