We currently have Nitto 555 Extreme radials on our '70 coupe. Fronts are 255X45ZRX18, rears are 295X45ZRX18. Rears rub the inner front corner of the wheel houses on corners/bumps.

This is a street/strip car, but mostly street. We'd like to find something a bit more sticky in back. Looks like we won't be able to match the size (295), or even drop the width to 285 or 275 in a drag radial in a 45 series. Would have to go to a 305 and there's no way that would work. Checked the Nitto 555R and M/T street radials.

A 305 might work if we can drop to a 40 or 35 series for sidewall height - but I don't really want to replace the front tires just because they're 45's.

Can you mix 45's in front with 40's or even 35's and still be safe on the road? The widths are already different.

Thanks for any advice. Safety comes first!
