: Cam for Goodwrench 350
ToyzRMe Dec 20th, 03, 4:53 AM I bought a '67 Camaro that, as close as I can determine, has a '96 Goodwrench 350 "hecho en Mexico" in it. After I corrected many things that the previous owner did, the little guy actually runs pretty good.
It has a Performer, 650 DP Holley, 1 5/8 headers, a Proform HEI and a T-350. Converter is stock or really low stall and the rear is an 8.2 3.08 with posi.
In this form, it will smoke the tires (275x60x15) all through 1st and about 30ft. or so in second.
The problem is, it's all done at 4700rpm and I suspect it's the cam/heads. It has plenty of fuel and is well tuned.
This motor will be taken out when I re-do the whole car and replaced with a BB but till then I want to pick up the RPM range to about 5500-5800.
Has anyone run something like a Comp XS262S solid in a motor like this? How was the bottom end and midrange? Or the hydraulic XE262H. How did it idle? I don't want to give up the bottom end power I have now, just add some top end, about 800-1000rpm.
Any suggestions for this mild little motor?

keithmalibu Dec 20th, 03, 8:20 AM check out blue racer cams ,made by crane cams,
onovakind67 Dec 20th, 03, 8:35 AM We had a Hecho motor like that with a XE268H-10 cam in it and it worked very well up to about 5500 rpm.
ToyzRMe Dec 20th, 03, 12:29 PM Did it lose much bottom end? I want to keep the bottom end and the tight converter 'cause I'm going to bracket race it alot in the footbrake classes and it's very responsive now.
I was thinking the XS262S but I'm not sure this will be enough. And I worry the XE268H may be too much for this lo-comp slug.
I deal mainly with heavily cammed BB street racer combos and race cars, but not much with mild-cammed daily driver stuff.

Bob Tiley Dec 21st, 03, 9:49 PM Something like a comp 262 is about as big as I would go with that 8:1 motor. I put in a Cam Dynamics Hyd. with .420 lift and it woke up one of those engines. It made a decent improvement but didn't set the world on fire.
300hp Dec 21st, 03, 10:23 PM why not go with a xe262 and throw on some vortecs.
travis g Dec 22nd, 03, 12:15 AM Comp 260H high energy. I have used this cam in a number of low compression 350's and the difference over a stock cam is night and day. Very strong low end and midrange, and it works great with the low compression and 3.08's.
ToyzRMe Dec 22nd, 03, 12:49 AM Bob, I'm really leaning toward the XS262S because of the short advertised duration and the good .050 numbers. I definitely don't want to overcam this car as it runs really pretty good as it is.
300hp... Vortech heads are not an option. This is all just to make this car fun to drive and footbrake race while I get all my other projects in line. This car is 5th on the project list. It will then get a full on restification inside and out with a Big Block slated to be under the hood.
Travis, that 260H may be an option also. It's definitely not too much. I definitely am keeping the 3.08 gear but I' going to put a steel shim head gasket on it and mill the heads to raise compression. Thanks for your input.
Has anyone heard the Xtreme Energy 262 solid idling in a lo-comp 350? I wouldn't think it'd be very ragged if at all. I don't want it all lumpy.
Thanks again for your input!

Georgia69 Dec 22nd, 03, 9:25 AM I run the XE262H in my 355. I think it or the XS262S would be a great cam. My only concern is your compression...I'm around 9.5 to 1. If you are down in the 8 to 8.5 range, you might ought to consider the XE256H.
ToyzRMe Dec 22nd, 03, 10:44 AM Georgia69, how's the idle and bottom end power with that cam in your 355? Will it pull to 5500 rpm? It doesn't sound very lumpy, does it?
What heads do you have on your 355?
Randy
Georgia69 Dec 22nd, 03, 12:57 PM Randy, this cam idles pretty smooth, plenty of vacuum for the brakes, has just enough lope to sound good, and works fine with a mild converter...I use a 2000 stall. It pulls hard to 5500-5600. I am using box-stock Dart IE180 heads. My only concern in your application would be torque...if your static compression is down around 8.5, you may not be happy with the off-idle power. In my 9.5 engine, with 3.42 gears, my street radials go up in smoke. But the M/T Sportsman Pro's (26x10.5x15) that I use at the track, it doesn't have enough torque to spin them. If I were gonna use this cam in an 8.5 motor, I would probably step up to a 2400 stall.
