BigRat09 Nov 8th, 08, 9:17 PM I have 18 x 10's and the biggest tire I could safely fit into my fenders (72 Chevelle) was a 295 from Nitto (555 Extreme). 3/8" clearance to the fender and about 1/2" to the frame. Nitto's website has a really good description of their overall width, diameter, and tread width. Take some measurements of your fenderwell in relation to your hub and then compare measurements:thumbsup:.
Nice elco!!
69496 Nov 9th, 08, 2:11 PM I have a 69 chevelle that I was hoping to squeeze in 305/40/18 as well with 18x10 wheel. Please post pics of what you end up with.
F1 Speed Nov 9th, 08, 5:45 PM 69 Chevelle with 305/35/18 Nitto drag radial on 18 x 11 Kinesis wheel with more than enough clearence inside & out.

I've got 18X10's with 5.75" BS and have 295X45 on my '70. They rub the inside edge of the wheel wells on corners. Couldn't do 305's.

What's your back spacing?
F1 Speed Nov 9th, 08, 7:06 PM Can't remember the back spacing off the top of my head. I'd have to pull a wheel off and measure it.

Do you know what your overall width is from fender to frame? I remember hearing that the 68/69 years had alot of room... like 14" or close to that. Is that true?
Gokou Nov 9th, 08, 10:12 PM Can't remember the back spacing off the top of my head. I'd have to pull a wheel off and measure it.
If the rear end is stock width I'd bet it's 6.25" +/- 0.25" depending on the tolerance stack up on your body/frame/rear end.
These widths of wheels are right at the limit of what these cars will fit with unmodified wheel wells so you need to measure your car, both sides in order to be correct.
Over the last year or so, I've received couple "complaining" PM's because guys bought 11" wheels with the exact backspacing on my car and it didn't quite fit their cars. Not my fault guys, I told you to measure first! That's why you have to measure when you get up to 11" wide. With narrower wheels, even if you're off 1/2" on the backspacing they'll probably still fit. With 11" wide wheels the margin of error is very slim, 1/4" of backspacing error can mean the difference between clearance and rubbing.
FYI, my next wheels are going to be 18 x 11.5" with 305 tires out back, and 18 x 10" with 265 tires up front. Already test fit these exact specs with wheels/tires from another vehicle and they fit well.
F1 Speed Nov 10th, 08, 6:52 AM As Troy said measure first. Every car is slightly different and with an 11.0 in wheel you have to get your body centered on the frame. Every Chevelle I have looked at has had the body a little to one side or the other but it's not that noticable with 10.0 rims and smaller. You will also need to address your rear control arms and bushings to minimize any flex and or binding, and in my case I had to replace the old worn out body bushings also.
The rear end on my car is stock width and the brake rotor hat is .5" thick which is a major consideration when figuring back spacing and wheel width.
As my car sits now I have a little more than 1/2" clearence at the narrowest point of the frame and a little more than 3/8" to the inside of the fender lip with absolutly no rubbing issues.

This is exactly why I am very hesitant to give out my back space specs. If I knew for sure that it would work on every car in the 68 -72 range, I would post them with confidence.
When it's all said and done, you could probably run a 305/35 on a 10" wheel but you need to check the tire manufacturers specs for the reccommended wheel size and address all of the above mentioned considerations. And one more thing to remember is that an advetised 11" wheel width is actually 12" lip to lip, so be careful when your talking about wheel widths.

F1 Speed Nov 14th, 08, 11:17 AM Sorry guys but I don't have any good ones at the moment but I really appreciate all the kind words and interest.
The current pic still shows it with the stock front susp. (way to high), but I'm hoping to finish that over the winter. I have everything except the upper control arms (still trying to decide which brand to use). I really wanted the new DSE uppers but they don't have any plans to sell them seperatly at the moment, so I may go with a set of Speed Tech's. The SPC uppers are super nice to but I'd like to be a little different.
gmorris Nov 14th, 08, 11:46 AM 18X11 with 315/30/18 Toyo R888 on mine. Just dropped the body on and they seem to clear okay. Currently replacing the full quarters so he's going to trim the lip a bit to make sure. Biggest issue would be a higher profile tire since the wheelwells narrow a lot up higher. I'm running a 6.5" BS and have about 1/2 inch to the frame with my LS1 rear rotors. I went with 6.5 BS so I could run a 1/4 inch spacer if I needed to add frame clearance. Glad I did since the spacing is good without them. The R888 is a really square tire so I was surprised that it cleared actually.
andrewb70 Nov 16th, 08, 7:10 PM I am using 295/40-18 Falken RT-615s. I see that Nitto also offer the 555R in a 305/40-18. Taller looks better.
