I have a 69 Chevelle SS 396 with the L89 options. I got this car from my dad who has had it in storage for the last five years. The car is all original except for a Demon 750 carb. The car is running way to rich and is very unpleasent to drive. I have taken it to a few mechanics, but they havent been able to get the car running right either. I have put some decent money into the car getting it inspected and replacing everything that is old on the car from sitting. Any help is much appriciated. Thanks!

First thing: Post your timing at idle with the vacuum advance disconnected, and what your total timing is.

Second thing: When you say it's running rich - do you mean when idling, when cruising, or both?

Since it's been sitting so long, the first thing I'd do after the timing is take the carb apart for a real good cleaning, and post all the numbers - what # shooter is on the carb, what # jets, what # power valve.

Depending on how far the carb is from "out of the box" settings (not just jets, etc but also float level, accel pump adjustments, etc), I'd consider changing everything back to the way it was originally. If you don't have this data we can still help, but more information is better.

I installed a Demon carb and it ran a little rich (black smoke from the exhaust). A buddy of mine installed smaller jets on the carb (he went down three sizes, although I don't remember what the final jet size he used), and that solved the problem. I'm not sure if the same might apply, but it worked for me.
