: Will a Vic. Jr. intake work on GMPP fastburn heads?
ZZ69chevelle Aug 26th, 04, 3:06 PM I'm looking at these heads, and they accept either vortec or raised runner intakes. A fella I was talking to said he was running them with a vic. Jr. intake. Does anyone know if it will work with them and match the ports correctly? I have one I'd like to use along with the fastburns and hotcam kit I already have. I was looking at AFR195's too, but wasn't sure if the self aligning roller rockers would work on those. TIA.

The AFR heads will accept the self-guiding rockers if you remove the guideplates and replace them with grade 8 or hardened washers of the appropriate thickness. You will not match the performance of the AFR's with the fast-burn heads without porting, and then some!Simply put,the AFR's are FAR superior. The AFR 180's flow similar to,and in some areas outflow the 195's.If you're building below 350 cubes,I'd stick with the 180's.Either way.the AFR heads will trounce the fastburns. Hope this helps,Steve
wanarace Aug 27th, 04, 12:39 AM You can use a Super Victor vortec intake with the fastburns without problem. From what I know the super victor vortec is a little smaller then the regular.

Aaron Kelley Aug 27th, 04, 1:12 AM Hey man don't give up on the fast burns. Mine with porting and larger valves made 490 HP at a low 6100 460 ft lbs of torque. This was with a 238/248 cam on pump gas.
I don't know if the AFR's are "far superior". But I'm sure they are better.
A few years back Popular Hot Rodding had a pump gas engine contest. While the winner was a AFR headed engine. The builder claimed to have quite a bit of porting in to them. The 3 place was a out of the box fast burn.
ZZ69chevelle Aug 31st, 04, 2:17 PM These heads will be replacing the L98's on my ZZ4 350. I thought the fastburn heads were revised and flowed better than the earlier heads, but I couldn't find any flow numbers or even results from people running them. AFR is a different story. I'm not going racing any time soon, but plan on tossing the L98's in my Camaro and want more out of my ZZ4. At this point I think even Vortec heads are better than the vette heads. Thanks for the info.
Slowpoke70 Aug 31st, 04, 8:35 PM Also, take in to consideration that Gary@GMPP has stated more than once that the Vortec head is often a better choice than the Fastburn head. He said they tested them expecting the Fastburn to out-do it's Iron cousing, and they quickly found out that the Vortec was just as good a plat form as the Fastburn, if not better.
Just something to think about.
Todd DeLaMuca Aug 31st, 04, 11:50 PM Here is some flow info for you. Read what they say at the top of the page, then scroll to the bottom for the numbers. I have the fast burns on a 383 stroker with the Hot cam and 1.6 rollers and it runs hard, although I don't drag race it so I have no quarter mile times for you.

Here is a guy who ran 11.57 @ 116 in a 67 Camaro, 355 ci with "out of the box" GMPP Fast burns.

I'd use a Vortec specific Vic Jr....GM also makes a good Vic Jr style intake (may even be made by Edel)

ZZ69chevelle Sep 1st, 04, 2:02 AM Thanks for those links. I think if I had to get a new intake to match, I'd go with the vortec RPM because this is just a street cruiser and doesn't see the track. It would probably work better with my combo too. I want to get heads that will give me room to improve as I go, but won't be wasted on my combo. The more I look into it, the AFR 195's are looking better. I'm shooting for somewhere around 450 HP that is still very streetable. Eventually this engine is going in my 88 Camaro.
PONYKILLER511 Sep 2nd, 04, 4:43 PM The Fast burn will give you more flexibility. The Fast burn engine will make 430/430 with just the LT-4 Hot Cam. 465hp with the 12370847 cam 1.6 rockers and a spring change. Still streetable.

PONYKILLER511 this is what ive been trying to do to my 385 fast burn crate engine 385hp/385tq. i want to upgrade to the 12370847 cam with the 1.6 rockers putting me at 465hp/410tq. i believe thats where id be with this cam swap and rockers. but i cant seem to get any good information on what valve springs i would need for this cam on my fast burn heads. can you help me juangomez22@yahoo.com

What type of intake are you using? If its the long tube runner setup Id stick with a smaller head, The TPI will only flow so much (and it aint much)...

It'll be getting a Stealth Ram intake when it goes in the 88. Since I posted this I still haven't done anything with the ZZ4. The cam is still in the box on a shelf. Once I started collecting BB parts, I got sidetracked and lost interest in the small block. I just need a short block 454 now. :)At this point it's looking like it'll just get the cam and keep the L98 heads when it goes in the other car.
