I know GM used to make a heat shield for the Q-jet because they had a problem with boiling the gas out of the car when hot. I still have the old cast iron beast intake so I need to find the part number for this heat shield.

It was an aliminum piece that had wings that came out front and back to block radiant heat from coming on to the carb. I know racer1320 used one on his 396 combo, i just cant find the part number.

THe gm parts man laughed at me when i tried to explain it to him. He said that its too old, but I just bought an A/C switch from a dealer that was over 33 years old. He just didnt want to look....

Thanks mike

Mike another option would be to go with a Phenolic Spacer to keep the heat out. Go about half way down the page (http://www.cantonracingproducts.com/phenolic/spacers.html) for the Q-Jet model.

UnclePennyBags and i just had a week long email battle with this. He should chime in too. i've now got an ungodly stack of gaskets and a new *cough*coathanger*cough* choke rod, but she seems to not be boiling over[no fresh dampness on the carb]. I'd really like to step up with a newer intake and rid myself of this problem, but my front oil fill tube is just to damned convenient. good luck graemlins/beers.gif

You can get the shield from Holley or Year One. Ground up probably sells it also.

It's a good upgrade. I cut my cold start times from 12 seconds to three seconds by installing the shield and a later style thick gasket with the phenolic buttons.

68Nomad - Coat hanger or welding rod work fine. Glad you got it sorted out!
