Looking for some ideas for a home alarm system. I would like to purchase a kit with 3 door contact's, and maybe 2 or 3 motion detectors. Installation and wiring isn't a problem as I have been in the communication business for quite a while. I have just never installed an alarm system. Any thoughts on where I can pick one of these up would be appreciated.

Are you wanting to have the system monitored? If so they will require there own control panel. As far as the hardware I bought all mine at radio shack.

No Rob, it has been my experience, at least where I live, that the screaming audible horn placed in the outside gable vent, generally scares away faster than anything else. Or rather, it wouldn't be any faster with the monitoring. They receive the signal, call me, call the authorities, etc. I live in a semi rural setting, but I do have some close neighbors that would be calling me as fast as the monitoring company. I would like to be able to add a sump alarm, which I know they are available, and possible have the panel call me if that alarm, or any alarm is raised. Any idea if that is possible?

all the major alarm company's here are more then happy to monitor anything you want to have wired into their panel ....... fire, flood, motion, pressure, power, it makes no difference to them as it all just shows up as a Zone alarm ...only difference is the trigger device

Smarthome.com has some cool stuff, although some of their stuff seems a bit pricey.

Well you just have to find a local supplier to work with you to find the controller you need. There are several out there, ADEMCO, Honeywell, Altronix, Potter Signal, EDCO, .
As you know all you have to do is hook in a phone line and set the unit up to call you. As far a kit, good luck searching.
X-10 has some neat devices for video over an IP address. Or just mount fake mini dome housing at doors to look like the real thing with signs and stickers that also can be purchased.
I had a system installed while the house was being built. Contracted through the electrical CO-OP. that I am a member of. I paid to have it done for the benefits of lower insurance rates. Fire and security monitored 24/7 to help protect two small dogs locked up in the house during the day, when the wife and I are not home.
Now as soon as they get the cost of laser cannons down to affordable
I'm getting two, one for the front area, one for the back area
ZAP no more problem l:)

Yes they have a panel that will call you and tell you what zone is in alarm..Alot of commercial panels have cell phone backup abilities so I know there available...where to get one and price is a different story.

they have a forum that is pretty good too. A Honeywell Vista (ademco) is a good panel that is not to expensive and programming is not to bad for a novice. I have a DMP system that I installed in my house.Contacts on the doors. glass break sensors and motion detectors in the house and garage, wireless contacts out back on the shed and water sensors in the basement in case a pipe breaks when i'm not home. I got it here

Its nice but kinda pricey.A honeywell or GE kit is a few hundred bucks.
There are companies that will monitor for a fraction of what the big name companies charge and they don't lock you in for five years either..

I have a DSC at my house and my vacation home. It's all hard wired and both have been very good systems, both have police mentoring and were professional installations.
