: Are You Guys Taking on New Projects or Holding Off?
Chevelle_Nut Nov 3rd, 08, 11:57 AM I got a sale ad from Ausley's the other day. There seem to be some good deals in it. Are the parts houses going to be able to survive the slow down?
Personally I was going to rebuild the front end on my 72 this winter but have decided to hold off. I figure I am in no hurry since it will be just a cosmetic rebuild I can wait.
Are you guys taking on new projects or are they on hold? If I come across on a good deal for another car I will jump on it, park it under cover and wait until things improve.
Derek69SS Nov 3rd, 08, 12:54 PM Holding off at least until after the election... not saying either will be better than the other, but there's so much "uncertainty" right now, I think things will rebound slightly regardless of who wins. (either way 1/2 the country will believe they've been "saved" from the other 1/2).
I'm hoping I'm right, so I'm waiting a bit to find out.
SS396ELKY Nov 3rd, 08, 1:29 PM I'm holding off on the cars but moving forward on my house expansion project. My house is more of a necessity than the cars.
WillW23 Nov 3rd, 08, 1:57 PM I am holding off as well, the economy is really bad, especially around here. I am actually trying to sell my 72 Monte Carlo, to make room in the Garage for another project I had started on, but will finish later. I hope people on E-Bay will want the Monte in these tough times.
LMacdonald Nov 3rd, 08, 2:00 PM I am moving forward with my current project, a 66 Chevelle. I just dropped off the car at Muscle Car Garage to get the exhaust completed and a the drive shaft installed.
I do have my next project lined up but we are holding for a while.
The next project for my son and I is a 1992 Chev PU SS454. I bought the truck new and sold it to my son a few years back.
BillsCamino Nov 3rd, 08, 2:24 PM I almost took on another very tempting Chevelle project last week but regretfully decided to hold off...NOT for any financial or political reasons.
Medical issue...
ART T Nov 3rd, 08, 2:29 PM Hang in there, Bill!
bowkevin Nov 3rd, 08, 2:44 PM I'm going to do some work on the underhood area. Some cosmetic and some mechanical. Just waiting til after New Years because I need a break from the cars. Lots of other priorities right now.
Bowtie-72 Nov 3rd, 08, 3:37 PM Holding off until the auto industry comes back. I'm in the industry, but paid mostly on commission, so people bring their cars in for more work, I get paid more.
In a holding pattern. I have no interest in another project vehicle (probably never will), but do have interest in projects for my Chevelle and boat. Lack of project funds = no projects. Chevelle runs and drives, so I can't complain :)
Chicken Coupe Nov 3rd, 08, 3:55 PM Haven't stopped my project, but I am doing more myself and more slowly. Plans for a May completion are getting farther off.
rubadub Nov 3rd, 08, 4:21 PM I haven't been working on mine in over a year, but I'll be back on it. Probably later this week, then non stop until its done.
Bisquit037 Nov 3rd, 08, 4:26 PM The economy is fine! I spent the weekend at a large auction and if the economy is as bad as everyone likes to say it is then there are alot of folks who have not heard the rumor. 2000 ford rangers selling for $4000, 2000 Dodge caravans selling for $5500. Yeah, that sure is a indication that we are deep in a depression.. Should I go on? Tractors selling for three times what they should, farm equipment bringing top dollar, dump trucks selling for 80K... and our economy is bad??? I'm not talking about any small time auction either, there was a few thousand pieces and hundreds of people bidding like crazy.. All this talk about a bad economy is just that TALK and if we don't start talking about it in a positive way we might as well just give up.
busterwivell Nov 3rd, 08, 4:26 PM I've got several projects now, but if a smokin' deal slapped me in the head, I'd probably do it. My Chevelle is about as done as it's gonna get.......passed the NSRA Safety 23 last spring. I've accumulated some parts for my 56 210 2 door sedan, need to get that one going. Actually, got that car while I was in the middle of my 47 Chevy 2 door sedan project, and need to get the 56 running so I can move it out of the garage to get back to the 47.
Hi-po SS 454 Nov 3rd, 08, 4:29 PM I've slowed down big time on my buying parts, unless something comes up at a price I can't resist
1970ElCamino Nov 3rd, 08, 4:30 PM I do one thing a weekend.
chevelledude71 Nov 3rd, 08, 4:58 PM My project will start next spring. I'm going to take my car to the Base body shop and start the body work. I'm thinking of changing the paint scheme up a little bit.
Beaux Nov 3rd, 08, 5:02 PM My lifelong project is in full swing, actually pretty much ahead of schedule at this point.
I have a dream to die broke and to leave nothing but debt for any and all to share.
Recent developments have likely upped my plan by about 15 years.
grandsport Nov 3rd, 08, 5:12 PM I was going to make plans for my dream garage, but i didnt get my 250 a week raise in june as promised. Then this friday i had to take a 250 a week pay cut!:mad:Thats a lot of extra fun money gone.Things in the auto industry suck right now.
I haven't been working on mine in over a year, but I'll be back on it. Probably later this week, then non stop until its done.
You know Rob... we're going to hold you to this... That means, you have to STEP AWAY FROM THE COMPUTER and TURN THE WRENCH ON THE CHEVELLE. :D
I'm recharged after taking some time off on my project - I've got an immense amount of labor to do, so my costs are fairly minimal at this time.

67ElkyBryan Nov 3rd, 08, 6:01 PM Since all I need to finish off my El Camino is an interior, I'm going to get that taken care of. But no new projects in the near future. At least not automotive wise. Next year is all about the house. New roof in the spring and I would like to remodel the kitchen and some landscaping. Time to be practical for a bit and lay off on the toys for a while.
jfkheat Nov 3rd, 08, 6:46 PM I'm holding off on the El Camino for now. I hope to start on it next year.

savage71chevelless Nov 3rd, 08, 7:06 PM I did a bunch of work to my 67 last year, and bought new carpet, seat covers, and a convertible top in the spring, but due to the economy and money being tight, along with job uncertainty, those parts are sitting in boxes in my garage. I hope to get them done in the springtime
Mr Chevelle Nov 3rd, 08, 7:11 PM I'm ready when the right car comes along. Still kicking myself about a 67 I didn't buy about a month ago......Hind-sight is 20/20.
68bye Nov 3rd, 08, 7:38 PM I'm almost done with my latest project. An '82 Corvette. It was a cheap easy build though. When I'm done with this, the Nova is next. I should have that done by January. Then new floors in the wife's truck, then I'm gonna get nutty with the Chevelle. I want all the other stuff out of my way so I can take the time I want to with the Chevelle.
Andy69 Nov 3rd, 08, 7:40 PM I'm moving right along. I've been tempted to sell the Healey to raise money for the Chevelle, but the missiz has gotten attached to it, so it looks like that one it next. I guess I'll have to keep selling on the side to keep the cash flow going :)
Keith Tedford Nov 3rd, 08, 9:16 PM During a recession it is certainly the time to get home projects done if you have the cash. There was a bit of a recession in '75 into '76. In '74 a friend waited six months for brick for his house. In the spring of '76 I had the same brick in three weeks. In 1982 I needed a new well drilled. That was a nasty recession. The guy witched on Tuesday, was drilling on Wednesday and had us all kinds of water by Friday. Normally we would have to wait months. He even passed on reductions in the price of well casing just to get work. Of course, if you are the one laid off it doesn't do you a lot of good. I've been on that end of the stick as well. In the first eleven years at GM I never worked a full year. Layoffs varied from a week to 15 months. It's no fun and I can certainly symapthize with all those laid off these days.
mr 4 speed Nov 3rd, 08, 10:24 PM I take on projects for a living...no shortage here! :)
Jim Mac Nov 3rd, 08, 10:45 PM Not spending much on projects. Just using parts I bought in the last year or so. Plus been getting rid of stuff to help pay for the projects. jim
BigsWick Nov 3rd, 08, 10:58 PM Our county announced a hiring and wage freeze last week due to decreased revenues, 1 week before my 7 year review at work. I was "promised" a 2 step pay increase this year because I had to take a step backwards last year due to a restructuring at my job. Fat chance that will happen now. Regardless, I had planned on reigning in the extra curricular spending due to the expected continued economic downturn. Fortunately I have lots car wise to keep me busy, and the big bucks are already spent. :beers:
Cameano Nov 3rd, 08, 11:22 PM I've been working on a couple projects for friends, no time to work on mine for now. But I've been doing small things, and have no plans to stop. I do plan on finishing up the El Camino before next summer. We'll see how that goes, as soon as I get this '46 Dodge finished. Should have it painted well before Christmas.
64SS427 Nov 4th, 08, 12:19 AM I'm taking on new projects, for everybody else! I do side jobs on the weekends, and desire for my work has increased exponentially in recent months. Work on my own? I take it out for a spin now and then. That's about it these days.

david_396 Nov 4th, 08, 12:53 AM Searching the local Craigslist came across a clean 72 Vega hatchback. Been on CL for a while. Pics look good, no rust around windshield. He's asking $300, gonna try $200. Had a V-8 vega years ago, (Hooker headers and narrowed to 56 chevy rearend thta was the 2" shorter than a stock vega rearend) Sold the whole car minus the motor/trans for $100 in '84 to get it out of my folks driveway, Got a call about a year later from an impound yard wwanting to know if I wanted it back. I was in college with no$$. Trying to rekindle my youth at age 46
mjdwyer23 Nov 4th, 08, 9:08 AM I am actively looking for a new project, a 70 Chevelle or another Grand National! There are some great deals to be found in this cash starved market -- I will probably hold off until February/March and see what falls out.
mjdwyer23 Nov 4th, 08, 9:09 AM BTW I've also started building custom drums as a hobby. Even if I don't sell any, I'll have a sweet collection!
1972convss454 Nov 4th, 08, 9:47 AM Started a new project this past weekend. Another '72. I don't plan on slowing down. I figure by the time I finish things will be going the other direction, if not, I will add it to the collection.
cuisinartvette Nov 4th, 08, 10:14 AM Trying to finish up what I have as soon as possible.
Each month is a question if Ill have to move and put it in storage for awhile or not til I start working, want it done once and for all.
