: Headers update....

i got the Hooker S/C's 1 3/4" headers on my sb 71 chevelle and they fit great. i was pleasantly surprised to find out that despite Hookers footnote about not being able to use a stock starter with these headers, i actually have more room around the starter than i have ever had even with the 1 5/8" headers. coulmn shifter linkage is kind of close though, i might have to do some adjusting there so it doesn't rattle or vibrate against the back tube. i'd recommend them for sure. :D

What size smallblock? I'm only running 1.75 on a .030 over 454. Same deal with my dynomax, I was able to drop the starter out and replace it at the track last weekend. I'm just thinking your tubes are too big, unless you have bigger plans in the future.

i think you could pick up from 1 7/8" or depending on how much compression and cam you have, maybe some 2" primaries.
believe me, an 11.5 to 1 406 with 215cc heads isn't gonna like a smaller header. most decent compression 350's pick up by going to 1 3/4" headers.
my 454 had the 2" primaries, but i had 11 to 1 compression and a decent sized cam. it did high 1.50 60ft times @3950lbs, so i don't think they cost me much if any bottomend. ;)

M71 there's a guy up in New Jersey (Racer1320) that is running 10.7-1 compression in a .060 over 454 that runs mid 10's with 1.36 60 ft. times and he's running 1.75 dynomax headers. Bigger tubes move the torque up in the rpm range, and to get a heavy car moving you need the torque down low. I wonder if you couldnt have 60 footed better with smaller tube headers?

i wonder if he couldn't go faster with a better header? how much does his car weigh? what convertor and gears? a 1.36 60ft time in a 2 ton car with 4.10 gears and no power adder and a tight convertor and only 454 cubes, off the footbrake would be almost unbelievable. i would definitely have to see it to believe it. ;)
with 4.56 gears, a t-brake launching at 4500rpms and losing about 500lbs, i definitely think that it could be possible. tongue.gif

RR, i checked out that link, and well to be frank about it, i'd have to see it to believe it. maybe it's true, but you have to admit it is pretty unbelievable without a power adder to accomplish that good of a 60ft time. i know of alot of nos equiped cars that run high 8's 1/4mi that don't 60ft much better than that. and those are high 5's in the 1/8mi. one of my buddy's has an 84 monte carlo with a 540 and a big shot 275hp right out of the hole in a 3300lbs car with 4.10 gears and a trans-brake and it only does high 1.20's hooking and that motor has 1000 ft/lbs of torque at the rear wheels, chassis dyno proven on more than one occasion. now if you take away the brake and add 600lbs i think you would see similar 60's from his engine. he has to be making at least 800 lbs of torque to get that heavy of a car to 60ft that good. i just don't see how that engine is anywhere near that kind of power.

I thought Ed upped the rear to 4.56 recently.
