: which MSD distributor do I need?

I'd like the easy tuning of the timing curve that a MSD distributor offers (or so I'm told). What part # do I need?

I've tuned my current HEI a bit, with a MSD cap and rotor. I also have an adjustable vacuum advance. However, I don't have much time or desire to hunt for different factory weights, grind them down, etc.

I have a MSD Digital 6 box, but I'd like to get a distributor that will work with and without it. Just in case I have to use that distributor in a different ride someday.

What is the difference between the part #'s that work with the ignition boxes and the ones that don't.

This is for a SBC, btw. So, how does everyone like their MSD's?

i'm about to do the same thing to my sbc. i'm planning on going with an MSD Pro Billet, locked out, Digital 6 box, not sure which coil yet, and with the Digital 6 you get a start retard feature to knock back the timing on start up, which is exactly what i want. i've never had anything but points or HEI before, and i'm getting tired of trying to keep an HEI tuned in with advance curves, the hard starting, inconsistant idling and performance, etc. i broke my good HEI, or i guess it just plain wore out, but i haven't had any luck getting the right advance curve, and still have a good, consistant idle. figured it was time to step up.

Anyone know which MSD distributor part # I will need to work with a Digital 6 box? As I said, I'd still like for the distributor to also work on a setup that didn't have an ignition box, just in case I need it for that situation in the future.

I know when I installed my current Digital 6 box, I had to remove my module and condensor from the HEI. I just wanted to make sure that if I ordered a particular part # that I wasn't stuck with a one trick pony.

ALSO, what is the difference between a MSD billet and Pro-Billet distributors? Thanks!

John, my wife and I will be moving to Houston at the end of February. We've been down there twice, to check out things, over the past year. Looked at several apartments and one house in Katy. We really love that area.

We'll be back in January to put a deposit down on a place. We'll have to get together one evening.

Well, I said screw it and went with an MSD #8361. It will only work with the ignition boxes (of which I have a Digital 6), but at only $189...it saved me some cash over the unit that comes with stuff I don't need.

If I ever need a different distributor for a ride that doesn't have a box, well I'll cross that bridge when I come to it.

Also, I ordered a set of 3" Summit Turbo mufflers. Can't beat the price and most on here seem to like the sound. I already have 3" exhaust with some Dynomax Race Bullets. I'm going to have everything flanged, so I can run all 4 mufflers when I need to be stealthy for daily driving, and when I want to be loud or open it up at the track...I can simply unbolt and move the mufflers around as I see fit.

Now...another week or 2 and I'll order more stuff. Man, I need alot to get this thing where I want it. Onto my research...... ;)
