: Is this a good idea or am i crazy
JB632BB Nov 2nd, 08, 3:26 PM I have just purchased a 72 chevelle. turns out it was a heavy chevy. I want to do a full frame off and make it a restomod. Using a 489 pro charged bb etc etc. I have the know how and the time. I want to re-sheet metal the whole car. There is just to much damaged metal on this car for me but very little rust . I want to do quarters, doors, fenders, hood and deck lid. My question is. Are the replacement sheet metal available from goodmark going to fit like an oem replacement. Or am I going to have to rebuild the new panels? I have a spot welder, plazma cutter and mig. Should I consider this or do the body work. This car was really ironed out buy a bondo maniac.
brans72 Nov 2nd, 08, 3:35 PM i would say do the body work hard to beat oe metal not to mention it is already on the car etc just my .02
furball8994 Nov 2nd, 08, 3:37 PM The reman sheet metal will not fit like OEM. Some are better than others, Even from the same manufacturer. You will need to at least tweek most panels to get them right but it can be done... If at all posible, I'd suggest doing your best to repair the original panels before deciding to replace....
Your other option (this may take longer and cost more) would be to find good, used panels..
figbash Nov 2nd, 08, 3:52 PM You should be able to get everything but the quarters in used sheet metal. That will be much better than any of the after market stuff. The full quarters won't fit as good as original but they can probably be made to fit well without too much trouble.

Clay72SS Nov 2nd, 08, 3:57 PM I would stick with as much of the OE metal as possible. I have Goodmark fenders, both full quarters, trunk lid and hood on my project. I even took the car to Cleveland Ga. to the same shop that did the Goodmark Chevelle. I am having huge difficulties with the two front fenders, and the rear quarters will need bondo to get them smooth.
I need 2 doors but am afraid to order the repro doors based on what I have seen with the other products. Sounds like you have the knowledge, but it is painful to spend big $$ on a new part and still have 100+ hours getting it straight. The companies are good about returning products that in my opinion should not have been shipped in the first place.
Body lines, thinner metal, waves etc. are what you are looking forward to. Had I known, I would have salvaged every piece of OE metal I could. I am glad I learned this on the Chevelle before I started any cutting on my 67 Camaro Vert.
I would use patch panels off of other OE metal if you have too. Just my opinion, but I am still doing bodywork to Goodmark metal. It is just the nature of the beast on repro stuff. They do the best they can, but even OE metal is not perfect.

Amen. See my other posts about the filler panel between the trunk and rear window post. New is never as good as original.
