djchino4 Nov 2nd, 08, 9:03 AM i can get it for 700 dollars acording to the seller it makes 420 horses
Casting numbers are as follows: Block= 14015 Heads= 8272990
It's a Mercury Marine (Mercruiser) take out.
this is what the ad says
for sale/trade BBC 454/420hp, carb to pan. In heated storage past 10 years.
Was a marine take-out. Rect. port heads,4-bolt mains, HD rods, roller rockers
what changes would i need to make to make it fit my 71 chevelle
and is it worth the price?
SWHEATON Nov 2nd, 08, 9:30 AM Looks ok to me esp if it runs well for that price and you can use as is with 420hp which is pretty good as is or re-cam with better inatake if you want too.
Was it a salt water or fresh water boat/motor,salt can really chew/corrode the block.
May not have provision for mech fuel pump, will need an elec pump.
May need to change oil pan too.
Also, find out if its a reverse rotation motor which a few boats have,in that case i believe a cam change and possibly distributor or at least the dist gear is all thats needed to go back to std rotation required for a car but i am not 100% sure on that.

Keith Tedford Nov 2nd, 08, 9:38 AM Salt water and reverse rotation are what you need to look out for. Might want to check the condition of the bearings too. These engines are always under load, unlike a car that is almost coasting when cruising on the level. A friend has one of these in a tube chassis '32 Ford truck and it works fine.
djchino4 Nov 2nd, 08, 9:41 AM it is salt water
about the rotation i just email the seller to see if he knows
would it be corroted in the inside because of the salt water or just outside?
pdq67 Nov 2nd, 08, 9:52 AM Depends if the water jackets were cooled directly w/ salt water or it went through a heat exchanger and cooled regular water that then cooled the engine??
Direct cooled, possibly corroded bad?, indirect, shouldn't be.

animal69 Nov 2nd, 08, 9:59 AM If it's a salt water cooled and been sitting for 10 years.........RUN AWAY now!

rq375 Nov 3rd, 08, 10:09 AM Check for bent rods too, marine engines do hydrolock from time to time.

Personal experience!!!!!!!!
Got water in #6 cyl in the jet boat a few years ago. Bent the rod and snapped the skirt off the piston. :(

wet headers are great until they flood a cylinder and carnage ensues...
