: Help me spend some money
MCAF Nov 24th, 04, 8:51 AM I am going to change over to a solid roller cam for my motor
old cam Comp Cams XR294HR-10 HYD Roller
294/300 adv. 242/248 @ .050 .576/.601 w/ 1.6 rockers
New Cam UDHarlod (Lunati) Solid Roller
292/304 adv. 259/268 @ .050 .668/.640 w/ 1.6 rockers
I will put in new springs, pushrods, lifters, etc form the cam. I have a little leftover I am looking to get the MOST BANG FOR THE BUCK
Here are my choices
Comp Cam timing belt ~ $470
Edle. Super Victor jr. intake ~ $220
OR
Shaft Mount rocker set up For the Dart Pro 1 heads ~$700
OR
Pull Heads for Port and Bowl work ~$600+
This might blow the budget tho.
Let me know what you guys think
Mike
mike1985 Nov 24th, 04, 9:34 AM you can almost never go wrong with better flowing heads.
MCAF Nov 25th, 04, 9:40 AM Nobody has any opinions on what would the most cost effective
10secBu Nov 25th, 04, 10:06 AM It all depends on what your ultimate goals are.
For me, I'd want the most power for the $$$ spent.
A belt drive provides no real power increase, only cam adjustability...I'd pass on it.
Shaft rockers while they can stablize the valvetrain, are probably overkill...basic roller rockers & good ARP rocker studs work mighty fine.
I believe my first choice would be to have the heads ported. Most of the power in a high performance engine lies in the heads, so spend your time and $$$ there for the most beneficial gains.
Now, if you wanted to play, you could put a small nitrous system on the car and pick up well over a second in ET if the combination is working as it should.
Many options, many opinions to be had.
greg_moreira Nov 25th, 04, 12:06 PM I agree. Pass on the belt drive and the shaft mounted rockers. Build a solid valvetrain with good roller rockers, spend what you gotta spend to wake up the heads, and if you dont already have a good single plane intake, start looking for one. If you already have a good quality single plane on there, I would not spend the cash just yet on the edelbrock victor in hopes that it will be better than what you got, cause going from one good one to another that may be a little better, probably wont be so much better that it really justifies the cost. Now if you have a stock intake or even a good hi rise dual plane, Id definitely think about swapping it cause the difference will be more worth your money spent. Also, chances are that there is a better torque converter out there for your new setup than what you have. You didnt mention anything about that, but Id surely consider it down the road as well cause the right converter will definitely do good things for your 60 footers, and possibly an eventual gear swap if its needed. Once again though, work out the valvetrain and heads right now cause you will find the most horsepower per dollar there.
MCAF Nov 25th, 04, 2:05 PM I do have a nitrous system and spray a 150 shot which picks it up a sec in the 1/8mi.
The reason I chose shaft rockers is mine are now 3/8" studs with 1.6 rockers If you price out stud girdle new rockers W/ 7/16 studs it comes pretty close to the price of the shaft rocker system
With this new cam it will spin up to 7000+ rpm range. The motor was built to handle 7500+
My goal is to have a 10 sec ride before I spray
I talked to Dart about doing some CNC head work their response was With the Dart pro 1 (215cc)heads they flow so well that their not much to gain with porting
I do have a good torque converter from Precision Industries It stalls @3500 I may have to adjust it once I go back to the track and see how it runs
Gears are 3.73 with the 700R4 tranny that is about the most Im willing to go with a first gear of 3.06
Now if I blow it up I have a built th350 in the wings ready to go with a gear swap
thanks Mike
Wolfplace Nov 25th, 04, 2:33 PM Mike,
If the shaft rockers are in your budget you are right, it's a no brainier with an aggressive roller graemlins/thumbsup.gif
Are they necessary, no but when it comes to a roller valve train,, use the best parts you can afford.
For rollers I would highly suggest the Isky Red Zones.
If you email me I can probably save you a few dollars on them. ;)
MCAF Nov 25th, 04, 4:00 PM Thanks Mike, once the holidays are over I had every intention to contact you for the Red Zone lifters what about the Jesel sportman shaft rockers
