Happy black and orange day. WTH
I haven't heard the complete story on this but who in the heck dreams this stuff up
Does the word Halloween have another meaning I am unaware of?
Not supposed to say Merry Christmas, now halloween.

Andy69 Oct 31st, 08, 12:11 PM down here, ultra religious people freak out over Holloween for some reason. I guess it's too satanic for them or something. Personally, I don't get it - it's just kids dressing up and getting candy. Our neighbors down the street are that way. Their poor kids will never understand why their parents won't let them trick or treat - they will only see all their friends out getting candy while they have to stay shut up in the house with the doors locks, blinds drawn and lights out.

Beaux Oct 31st, 08, 1:01 PM Violence solves everything. The people that raise this kind of ruckus about nothing just need to have their face planted in the pavement and need to be given a nice arm bar until they understand that live and let live is a two way street. Religion probably killed all those people that folks are paying tribute to on Halloween anyway....:D
Ef em, you run into these people tell them your going to dress up as Jesus, your buddy is going as Mohammad and your gonna pretend fight, have legions of followers murder eachother and.....flip over everyones "candy exchanging tables".....and marry 9 year old girls all the way through your block party.....

How some people can think that if your kid dresses up and gets candy, it means they're going to hell, is beyond me. Kids look forward to this all year, and anyone who takes that away from them is an idiot.
In fact, idiot is much milder than what I'd like to say, but you get the idea.

I dont subscribe to this sort of "insane oppressiveness" as you call it, but I really dont think they will be all that screwed up. I had plenty of friend through school that didn't take part in ANY holidays, and they turned out just fine. That was part of their religion it was part of their family atmosphere.
Holidays are only this big in the United States. I believe this holiday along with what Xmas has become only feeds into the intitlement mentality that we are growing here at home. There are lots of kids that I see, not dressed up and just going from hose to house asking for candy. Last night I took my 7 month old riding around with some friends of mine that had a 5 year old that was trick-or-treating, and some kids in front of us said some bad stuff to an older man that didnt have candy.
Again I really don't think these kids are missing out on any "big" right of passage. I didn't truly go trick or treating untill I was a freshman in high school, but then again that was in the 80's when everyone was scared of needles and razor blades being in the candy. :D
Rowdy Nov 1st, 08, 4:11 PM Ef em, you run into these people tell them your going to dress up as Jesus.
Funny you mentioned it. First off, let me start by saying that I was born on Easter, so I've always answered "what" whenever somebody blurts out "Jesus Christ" in a condesending manner. Since my look leans a little towards the ZigZag man, it's almost a no brainer. About six or seven years ago, I went the full monte, so to speak. Took an off white flannel sheet, cut it into two full length "T"s, crudely sewn accordingly and drawn at the waist with a rope type sash. Add sandals and a burgundy blanket hanging freely over my right shoulder with a relaxed swoop behind my back, rising as it continued on around my left side, where it was draped over my left forearm (bent at the elbow about waist level).
There was no mistaking who I was dressed as, but I didn't stop there. I discreetly twisted the bulb out of a AAA MagLite in the back of my hair and wired it down the neck hole to a small switched battery pack, conveniently attached to the inside of my sleeve. I would strategically locate against a dark wall, every so often, briefly displaying an illuminated halo behind my head. Party goers would catch a glimpse out of the corner of their eye, but it was gone just as quick.
Did I mention that I did this during a HUGE Hell's Angels Halloween Bash at a local bar. People were noticeably freaked whispering amongst themselves, but nobody inquired into the halo that they thought they had seen. I don't think anyone other than a waitress actually spoke to me for the better part of three hours. Batteries dead and the effects of many beers and Cuervo shots becoming apparent, my mortality was exposed, along with a good deal of my nether regions, as my sewing left as much to be desired as my virtue.
A little post script.
You may recall a Kanye West music video a few years back that played off Evel Knievels
Snake River Jump. For the better part of a week, I had 5 RV's on the west rim of the Grand Canyon for that job. In the original storyline, it called for a scene with Jesus hitting golf balls out of the clouds. The actor hired for the part looked like an albino and the director sent him on his way. Guess who was recruited for the part. Yep, for one whole day, all of my normal tasks were performed while dressed as Jesus (Moses, in my opinion, poor costuming). Late in the day a grip backed a truck into one of the enormous cloud machines and the scene had to be scrapped. Damn....Fame and Fortune snatched right out from in front of my face.
The mayor of Toronto is on a big Socialist kick, also wants to ban all guns even though the majority of guns used in crimes have never been legally registered anyway..........
68bye Nov 1st, 08, 11:31 PM All Hallow's Eve is the one night when the dead came back from beyond to claim victoms to take back with them. Children would dress up as demons, zombies and gouls to confuse the dead. Their reward was candy.
Samhain (pronounced SOW-winn) is the Wiccan new year more or less. It celebrates the ending of old things and beginning of the new.
Notice how NOBODY refered to Satan here? That's because it has nothing to do with him. It aggravates the ever-lovin' crap out of me to see people trash stuff, or be offended by something they know absolutely NOTHING about, or care to learn about!!!

Thank gosh for the kiddies dressing up as demons/ghouls etc.to scare off the dead.I guess the adults would be less than convincing in the same attire.
I love all hallow eves for the kiddies to have some fun under supervision and i am sure the dentists agree/disagree.
IMHO..trick or treating is for youngsters that do not need to be exposed to the fears that previous generations of uneducated non scientific adults held.
Heck..why send your costumed kiddy out in the world to confuse the dead when you can simply staple your 401k qaurterly statement to your mailbox.
Now that is scary.
Jebchevelle Nov 2nd, 08, 12:38 AM lol I love tricker treating. but in truth I just love the costumes. last year I wore an adult blanket sleeper jammies and depends and had a binky and diaper bag to my docs apointment it was on holloween day last yr. most of the comments I got were ok some about how adorable my outfit was some about how horrible it was that I hadnt grown up yet. but the one that cought me off gaurd the most was the docs " where is your teddy bear all babies need a teddy bear that would have completed the outfit" oh and as Iam leaving the VA hospital the nurse who checks ppl in was on break as I walk by she says" are you wearing a diaper?" I said yes. she says "I thought your outfit was just to adorible but the diaper is just great it gives it such a touch of realisem" then she proceeds to tell the person on the other end of the cell phone about me and takes pics then patts my butt as Iam walking away while holding the phone so the other party could hear the diaper rattle.

SUMTER, SC (WIS) - Officials with the Sumter Police Department say a child has been shot dead while trick-or-treating in Sumter.
Sumter Police Chief Patty Patterson said a mother, father and four kids were trick-or-treating on Main Street when they decided to go to a home with lights on at Wise Drive.
"A family doing the traditional thing that families do on Halloween evening. Had been out trick-or-treating, and celebrating with their children," Patterson said.
Police say the family did nothing to provoke this.
Officials say the father, Freddie Grinnell, and his three boys went up to the porch as the mother and her toddler stayed in the car because of the cold weather. That's when they say the mother heard what she thought were firecrackers, but it was actually gunshots fired from an AK-47 assault rifle inside the home.
Authorities say Freddie, his 9-year-old son Ahmadre Darrisaw, and his 12-year-old son TJ Darrisaw were all shot in the incident. They add that TJ was taken to Tuomey Regional Medical Center a short time later where he was pronounced dead.
Patterson says they have 22-year-old Quentin L. Patrick and 19-year-old Ericka Patrice Pee in custody.
"The suspect, Patrick, admitted to law enforcement that he fired his AK-47 weapon, emptying the weapon. Through his front door, after hearing persons at the front door and observing them wearing masks," Patterson said.
Police say Patrick told authorities he had been shot in the past, and didn't want to be shot again.
Authorities say they found the AK-47 and a 9mm pistol inside the residence. Patrick is being charged with murder, two counts of assault and battery with intent to kill and one count of assault with intent to kill.
Officials say Pee was also at the residence with her 2-year-old daughter at the time of the shooting. They added that Patrick and Pee tried to leave the residence after the incident with $7,500 worth of cash. Pee is being charged with obstruction of justice.
would not be surprised if they outlaw Halloween altogether now
