: 498 build up + intake question

Hi folks, new here my name is Ron. A 48 year young drag racer.
Excuse me if this is a little long.
After a Fram oil filter problem (a mistake I'll never make again) I decided to freshen up my 468, a wise choice once I got in there.
That combo was as follows:
Edelbrock oval port alum heads, Dart single plane intake, 950hp holley DP, Ultradyne solid 255/263 612/638 lift 110 lobe sep. This was a 9.4:1 cr pump gas deal. Bottom end was steel crank, stock rods and TRW pistons. TH400, 4.10's 10" slicks, 2" Hooker Comps and a 3" DR gas exh "X" system. In my 3500# Nova (sorry....I do miss my 70 SS Chevelle) it was good for high 10's @ 121 on good days. Driven to the track always.
BTW...on the dyno, this 468 made 560hp @ 6400 and 540 tq at 4800.

The freshen up turned into a 498.......what can I say, I couldn't help myself.

The new combo:
Scat crank, Manley 6.385 rods, SRP pistons. It will be approx 10:1.
Heads are AFR 305 with CNC chambers.(much better flow #'s than the Edelbrocks) Cam is going to be a Comp XR292R which is the extreme energy roller with 254/260, 660/666 lift 110lobe sep, quite similar to the UD solid, but will have more area under the curve. Trans, converter, exh and carb will remain the same. Might have to switch to 3.73 gears, time will tell.

The question is, which intake manifold to use? I'm real tempted to go with another Dart since it worked just fine.

But there are a number of choices, and I have yet to read any sort of comparison between them. Lets see... Weiand Team G, Edelbrock Victor JR, Edelbrock Victor 454 (dominator), Merlin, Brodix, and last and probably least the Holley. With this engine, I won't even consider a dual plane. Tried that on the 468 and it slowed down.

Any suggestions? Us normal folks can't buy one of each and pick the winner. And the perf mags don't seem to want to run the comparrison.

This is a good board and I appreciiate being able to be a member.

BTW....hoping for low 10's this time around.

Ron, We used two different manifolds on my son's 482, both were Dominator manifolds. The Edelebrock Victor worked best out of the box but the Dart was faster ported, only about 1/2 tenth difference between them. We're going to try the Super Victor on the 540 soon.

Thanks,
I'm sure my car would like a dominator, but it's not in the budget just yet. And I'm not sure how street friendly they are? I am a trailerless fellow who enjoys the challenge of driving to and from the track. Of course if the car breaks......
And the other question woule be, which dominator? Holley makes a two 1050's, both recomended for single 4bbl applications.
I do have one I can borrow, but thet would mean I'd need to have a dominator manifold. No sense adapting one to a 4150 manifold.

Most guys here who did the comparo ran faster with a dual plane, ala. RPM, GM #163, etc. But, every combo is different, adn this is mostly 468c.i. data.

I'm running a "Team G" on my 496(10:1,Merlin iron heads,850 holley).I've never run a dual plane intake on this motor,so I can't compare the two.All I can say is it pulls "freak'in hard"
from start to finish.I'm gonna have to try a dual plane intake to see if I'm missing the low end that everyone is talk'in about. smile.gif

Ron 454, We picked up two tenths going fron an 850 (11.0s) vs the model 9375 - 1050 Dominator(10.80s) but their are driving problems just off idle with the double pumper dominators with annular discharge and the plug life is near zero.

Years ago there was an article done comparing cams and intakes on a "Saturday night Special" 460 or 468 motor.

From the article, a Linginfelter modified Holley Strip Dom. single plane was right in there with a stock Dart up to about only at the very top!!!

The thing about the Strip DOm. was that stock, it is a very reasonably priced intake AND it is a lot shorter then the Dart if hood clearnance problems are of a concern..

But this is a very old article so may not be up to date b/c of advances in single plane intake design changes..

I did go with a Strip Dom. for my mild, "tow-truck", 496 motor, but mine's not in my car yet.

Thanks for the responses guys. Appreciated much.

427L88....I just don't think a 496 with a fair amount of cam will like a dual plane. If anthing, it'll smoke the 10" slicks even worse! :)

70BB, before trying a dual plane, you ought to borrow a 950HP carb. Every car we have made that switch on has picked up 2 tenths. I sold my vaccuum sec 950 to a friend who was running an 800dp and he picked up 4 tenths! He ended up running a 10.95 @ 123 with a 3.31 geared 70 Chevelle with a roller cammed 461. Sort of ticked me off! :) No lie about the 3.31's either.....

Harold, that's what I figured about running a dominator on the street. I suppose a real savvy carb guy could get around that with tweaking the new HP series....but I am not one of those guys. Thanks for the info.

I remember that article. Lingenfelter (rest his soul) modified the strip dominator by increasing the length of the runner dividers. Worked very well indeed. That has to have been 10 years ago, and manifold tech has come a long way since then. Holley hasen't done anything new with manifolds in years....but I believe they bought Wieand.

So....I just might stick with te Dart since it's a known quantity to me. My old combo didn't run too dang bad. Too bad it was an oval port manifold. I like grinding....but not that much, and I'd probably get it wrong anyway.

Thanks a gain gang, fun group!

Ron, funny that you mentioned the 950 carb. Thats exactly what my step dad and I were recently discussing.I'll try that soon. The 3:31 gear you mentioned is close to the 3:42 I'm running now. smile.gif

How about an old Holley 950/1050 three-barrel if you want to pay for it after you find one??
