How strong are the Scat 9000 crank shafts? Strong enough for a 496 with Edelbrock RPM heads and performance package? This would be a pump gas motor and would see some bracket racing.

Quite strong.

Yes, but I would prefer not to use it in a +6500 RPM deal & always prefer a forged crank for a performance application if it is in the budget.

Hmmm, just used performance & budget in the same sentence graemlins/clonk.gif
Shame on me :D

I run a 9000 in my 7000 rpm 350 but it has lightweight pistons and rods, and a much shorter stroke. According the David Vizard, they are about 25% stronger than a Chevy cast crank.

I've read that the 9000 series BBC crank can handle up to 700 hp. I'm considering one for my future 496 build also , not only because of my budget but , do you really need to spend $900 on a forged crank for a street driven , weekend cruiser. What causes the most stress to a crank , RPM's , HP , or TQ ?

what I'am looking for is a rotating assemble. The edelbrock parts I already have are supposted to put out 540 hp in a 468. I have everything but the rotating assemble and thought why not go 469? Can anyone recommend where the best deal on one might be?

p/lineman,
Check on e-bay under engine parts and components and search for 496 scat they usually have good deals there ,however watch out because some sell the "seconds" or rejects from scat , so you have to buy oversized bearings. If I recall there is a place in Brookings SD ,cnc-motorsports ,that sells them. I'm considering the same edelbrock build as you keep us posted on how this goes.

thanks for the info, I'll check it out and let you know how it goes. I have this same Edelbrock setup in a 65 SWB pickup right now with a 396 and it works great. Runs 12.90's in the pickup, not too bad.

Mitch,
No you don't need a forged crank for a street driven weekend cruiser.
I have used Scat's cast cranks in a lot of engines.
What I said was I prefer a forged crank in a performance application.
To give you an idea of the strength of Scat's cast cranks, I did the machine work & balancing for a customer who put one in a 383 that was run in a modified alcohol deal to around 72-7400 RPM for three seasons before it finally broke.
Not bad for a $240 crank.
In my opinion RPM & heavy parts are the hardest on a crank & rods.
The more torque you have the more load you are putting on your parts so it is also a factor.
Another reason to look at a forged crank in a stroker is depending on parts they are much easier to balance without Tungsten which gets very expensive quickly.
If you have to spend $250 to $300 extra to balance your budget cast crank you haven't saved much as a good Scat 4.250, 6.385 rod forging is less than $650 not $900. ;)

If you send me an email, we have pretty fair pricing on Scat stuff.
